County Line Raceway
Boykin Takes Inaugural Four Cylinder Nationals
An absolutely beautiful day greeted drivers, fans and staff for the 1st Annual 4 Cylinder Nationals at County Line Raceway. This event, months in the making, would have been a dream come true for Victor May. Victor, had 49 over all wins with 38 of those wins coming in the super stock 4 division. We lost Victor in April of 2011, but he will never be forgotten. Tonight, we honored him with a new banner in our victory lane, as well as offering several contingency awards in his name.
Up first, the return of the Modified 4's. These tube chassis 4 cylinders have not run at County Line Raceway in the last 10-15 years, but would make their return tonight. Jason Clark and Edward Street would lead the field the green, but Street would experience mechanical problems on lap 2 which would bring out the caution. Jason Clark would lead Rusty Kelley from lap 2 to the very end of this 20 lap feature bringing home the win.
Our 2nd feature of the night, the Walls Roofing UCAR Nationals UCAR division lined up with Dwayne Godwin and Marty Dean on the front row. Godwin would bring out the caution on lap 1 when got up on the berm in turn 4. Back green with Marty Dean leading Daniel Thomas, Dale Pate, Mike Chapman & Tim Brown. The leader, Marty Dean, would get into the wall in turn 1 bringing out the caution on lap 4, moving Daniel Thomas into the lead. Mike Chapman took over 2nd spot from Dale Pate, as Time Brown and Dwayne Godwin battled for 4th spot. Lap 6 would see a caution for debris, slowing these cars once again. Lining up with a "Delaware" style restart which gives the leader his lane choice out front alone, Daniel Thomas brought them to the green. Sided by side the 18 of Chapman and 22 of Dale Pate would run down the backstretch with Chapman taking the spot. Dwayne Godwin & Dale Pate would go side by side with Godwin on the high side trying to take the 3rd spot from Pate. Chapman would catch up with Thomas and as they caught slower traffic Chapman would get around Thomas to take the lead with 4 to go! Mike Chapman would go on to bring home the win followed by Daniel Thomas, Dwayne Godwin, Dale Pate & Jesse Jones.
Coming up for 25 laps, the Pure Stock 4 cylinders lined up with Gary Dillon and Damien Bryant on the front row. Gary Dillon would go out front as Damien Bryant, Daniel Hill, Michael Webb and Brandon Hill. Lap 3 would see a caution for Brandon Edmondson as he slowed coming out of turn 4. Back green with Dillon holding off Bryant, Hill and Webb, as Brandon Hill lost ground allowing Cooper Edwards to get around him to take over the 5th spt. Damien Bryant would slip and falloff the pace just enough to allow faniel Hill to get around him for 2nd spot, then Michael Webb got around him as well. Cooper Edwards started looking on the inside of Bryant just as the caution came out for Brent Atkinson, who slowed in turn 4 on lap 8. Back green with Dillon continuing to lead Daniel Hill, Michael Webb, Damien Bryant & Cooper Edwards. Lap 12 would see 2 cars get together over in turn 2 which would bring out the caution yet again. Thomas Holbrooke & Eric Hill got together, and after clean up from track staff, we were back green with Dillon still out front as he took the half way cross flags. Michael Webb would make the move on Daniel Hill to take over 2nd spot, while Damien Bryant challenged Hill for 3rd. Joey Morgan would challenge Bryant just as Bryant experienced some sort of issue that would slow him and he would exit the track with only 10 to go. Gary Dillon would lead Michael Webb, Daniel Hill, Cooper Edwards and Joey Morgan to the green flag. Morgan would go inside of Edwards to take over 4th spot as JP Brantley moved around to take over 5th. Dillon held his ground, putting about 4 car lengths between him and 2nd place Webb. A caution on lap 23 would slow this field yet again, meaning we would have a green, white, checker finish. Gary Dillon brought us to the green, followed by Michael Webb, Daniel Hill, Joey Morgan & JP Brantley. Bringing home the $1250 win Gary Dillon! He was followed by Michael Webb, Daniel Hill, Joey Morgan & JP Brantley.
Our final event, the 50 lap Super Stock 4 race would show their appreciation for the fans with a 4 wide salute and as they fell back in line, Mark Boykin & Austin Holcombe would lead this field to the green. Mark broke the track record earlier tonight with a fast time of 17.369, picking up the $169 given by Lewis Tax Service & Troy Liles/Farm Bureau. Side by side, Boykin & Holcombe raced the first lap, but it would be Holcombe leading lap 1. Lap 3 would see the 17H of Michael Hall get around in turn 1 bringing out the caution. Back green with Holcombe leading Boykin, William Carroll, Hunter Bailey & Kevin Pierce. Hard racing throughout the field would see the 44 of Chris Moore get into the wall off of turn 2 and flip on the backstretch. Chris was ok and able to exit the car. After clean up by track officials, we were back green with Holcombe leading Boykin, William Carroll, Hunter Bailey & Kevin Pierce. Lap 5 would see a huge mess on the backstretch as Hunter Bailey got into Kevin Pierce just slightly, causing Pierce to go up the track, then back down in front of the field. He would collect Dustin O'Neal, as Dustin Mitchell got into Jason Horne and Eric Hobgood was involved. After clean up we were back green with Holcombe leading, William Carroll, Mark Boykin, Greg Brew and John Proctor. Lap 6 would see another caution for a slow car, but it was a very short yellow. Holcombe leads Carroll Boykin, Proctor and Russell Erwin. Lap 14 would see a caution when Pete Brew experienced mechanical issues and slowed out of turn 3. William Carroll, currently running 2nd, would pit with some sort of mechanical issues dropping him out of the top 5. Back green with Holcombe leading, but Mark Boykin would get around him to take the lead. John Proctor would attempt to get around Holcombe to take over 2nd spot, door to door for 2 laps until Proctor completed the pass. Lap 19 would see another caution, as Dustin O'Neal slowed down the backstretch but could not make it to the entrance of pit road. Back green with Boykin leading Proctor, Erwin, Holcombe and Eric Hill. Eric Hill would work his way around Holcombe to take over 4th spot as John Proctor was trying to run down Mark Boykin. Eric Hill would spin on lap 23 in turn 2, but with a competition caution coming at lap 25, he could most likely make it up. Boykin continued to lead Proctor, who was looking hard at getting around Boykin as Dustin O'Neal would spin over in turn 4. Coming up on a 10 minute break, these teams were allowed to change anything on their cars within the 10 minute time limit. After the break, we were back green with Boykin leading Proctor, Erwin, Pierce and Holcombe. Bobby Bottoms held on to 6th spot followed by Jimmy O'Neal, William Carroll, Eric Hill and Jesse Duke rounded out the top 10. Mark Boykin put about 4 car lengths between he and Proctor on lap 32. Russell Erwin held steady in 3rd spot Austin Holcombe in 4th and Kevin Pierce in 5th. William Carroll would challenge Kevin Pierce just as the caution came out for Ron Hill on lap 35. Back green with Boykin leading Proctor, Erwin, Holcombe and Carroll. Lap 40 would see Kevin Pierce spin after contact with Eric Hill in turn 4 collecting Austin Larrison. Green flag, Boykin leading Proctor, Erwin, Carroll. Holcombe, Jimmy and Dustin O'Neal were 3 wide all battling for 5th spot. Holcombe would take the spot as brothers battled for 6th. Up front, Boykin, Proctor and Erwin were nose to tail just as Eric Hill brought out the caution when he got out of shape in 4 and got up on the hill. Back green with Mark Boykin leading. At the start/finish line they were 3 wide with Austin Holcombe suffering as he got caught up in the melee. Back green, Mark Boykin holding off John Proctor and Russell Erwin. Erwin got around Proctor, Jimmy O'Neal held on to 4th spot as Glenn Bottoms maintained 5th. Coming to the 2 to go flags, and it's still anybody's race folks! People were on their feet as the top 3 battled it out for that $4000 paycheck. As the checkered flag fell it would be Mark Boykin, John Proctor, Russell Erwin, Jimmy O'Neal and Glenn Bottoms. After post race tech inspections, the top 5 were altered due to a disqualification.
