LUPTON FINDS SUCCESS ON BIG NIGHT
On a night devoted to fighting cancer, Dylan Lupton drove his heart out in his #56 HPR Late Model. Having showcased his competitive talent throughout the year, Lupton was a sure threat for the win on a night that had the starting lineup jumbled by a six car invert. With obstacles thrown at him in forms of flying debris and spinning cars, Dylan drove with his head and came home with another good finish.
Practice was a big focus in first practice for the young driver, who put down the fourth fastest time during the first session. Once the setup was in Dylan’s liking, the team saved the car for qualifying. Lupton went third fastest in time trials, just edged out by Miinch and High Point Racing teammate Brandon Davis. With the invert dice landing on six, Lupton was set to start fourth in an event that proved patience is a virtue.
The green flag flew over the field of Auto Club Late Models at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale and Dylan quickly settled into a groove, knowing the importance of maintaining his equipment for all of the forty laps. Running sixth for the first fifteen laps, the #56 was seen running a smooth line and avoiding any threatening scenarios. On lap fifteen, the patience pulled off for Dylan, as the leaders went three wide into turn one. Upon the exit of turn two, the car in the middle got sideways and had major contact with the car on the outside, sending one car sparking and the other spinning. With some great maneuvering through the wreck and a heads up call from the spotter, Lupton was able to avoid contact as another car came careening into the wreck. The #56 came out of the smoke unscathed.
The red flag gave Dylan a chance to reconfigure his strategy for the rest of the race, and when the green flag resumed the race, he focused on moving up. On lap nineteen, Lupton made the move that put him into the second position behind Davis. The second half of the race finished without any issues for Dylan, and he pulled off another podium finish in the second spot. The great points night moved Lupton into third in overall points and closer to second.
Lupton’s next race will be on August 6, 2011 on Law Enforcement Appreciation night at the speedway. For more information on Dylan, please visit www.luptonracing.com.
