Lupton Sweeps The Night
Dylan Lupton had already clinched his first Auto Club Late Model win at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale a few weeks prior to June 18, but after a rough race the previous week it was clear that the young driver was ready for redemption. June 18th turned out to be the biggest field for the late models in 2011, with 26 competitors giving Lupton a run for his money.
The weather was warm during the day, with a major cool off once the sun dissipated under the Los Angeles horizon. Dylan took his #56 High Point Racing machine out for only the first practice session, laying down the third fastest time. Since the track was filled with a busy schedule, the Auto Club Late Models had a rare, early qualifying session in the sunlight. Lupton put down a fast lap, slotting him in third and only three hundredths off of the fast time set by HPR teammate Brandon Davis. The inverts left Dylan starting third in the first twin 30 lap event, and first in the second race.
The first race for the late models was the first main event of the night. Once the green flag fell it took Lupton two laps to reach the second position, right behind leader Taylor Miinch. The two drivers battled side by side and on lap four, the #56 was on the point. After surviving a few restarts, Lupton held off two of his teammates for his second career late model victory.
While the first twin race was predictable, with drivers making sure their cars came back for race number two; a lot of give and take and extra respect. Unfortunately, race two was when all the preservation from race one went out the window. Right after taking the green, a multi car incident on the backstretch took out several competitors. Lupton’s qualifying effort helped him be ahead of the early carnage and lead every lap of the race, finishing over a second and a half ahead of second place Davis. Dylan also ran the fastest lap of the race, being the only driver to average over 95 miles per hour.
With two wins in one night, Lupton now sits fifth in series points and carries momentum into next week’s race, ending the three week stretch for the late models. Next Saturday, June 25th, will also feature Metal Mulisha Freestyle Motocross at the track. Dylan will be going for win #4, and HPR will be going for its third podium sweep in a row. Dylan Lupton couldn't have accomplished what he has so far this year, without the many partners and people backing him. Lupton would like to thank Durocast Radio, Lupton Excavation, D Racing Enterprises, High Point Racing, Justice Brothers, Liz-Zard Engines, Racecar Factory, and all the fans for the support.
