Ian Madsen Records Knoxville Nationals Top-10
PETERSEN MEDIA- Heading into the Knoxville Nationals as the current Knoxville Raceway point leader, Ian Madsen represented well as he locked into the feature after qualifying nights and raced his way to a 10th place finish.
“All in all I was pretty happy with how our week went,’ Madsen said. “We ran 10th in the big show when it was all said and done, and as an added bonus our Aspen Aire Heating and Cooling car won best appearing, and we were named the second best looking crew.”
Hitting the famed Knoxville Raceway black gumbo on Thursday night for his qualifying attempt at the Nationals, Madsen would over come a 50-pill and time the Aspen Aire/Logan Contractors Supply/Royal Flooring No. 18 machine in 16th fastest overall in time trials.
Lining up fifth in his heat race, the St. Marys, NSW native would work his way up to a third place finish in his heat race and transfer into the 25-lap feature event. Missing the inversion by just one spot, Madsen would grid the field from the ninth starting position.
On a wide a racy surface, Madsen was able to carve his way forward against an extremely strong group of cars up front. Battling forward, Madsen would gain valuable Nationals points with each and every move. Getting into the Top-Five, Madsen would make a move around Daryn Pittman on the race’s last lap to finish in the fourth spot.
When points from Wednesday and Thursday were tabulated, Madsen’s late move proved to me huge, as he would lock into Saturday night’s feature in the 15th spot, with only the Top-16 locking in.
Rolling out the old KCP Racing car on Friday night, Madsen would spend much of the night as a spectator before taking part in the Speed Sport World Challenge. Using the race as more of a test session for Saturday night’s finale, Madsen would start eighth and finish seventh and explain they tried some things that didn’t really work how they had hoped.
The body of work came down to Saturday night’s 50-lap feature event, and Madsen did not disappoint from his 15th starting spot. With the track tricky in the feature with a treacherous curb built up around the ½ mile speedway, he was still able to move forward.
Timing his moves carefully, Madsen would race his way to a 10th place finish in the season’s biggest race.
“I really feel like we capitalized each and every time we hit the track,” Madsen said. “To run 10th at the Nationals again is huge, and we will continue to build off this for the rest of the year ahead.”
Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Team Kline Electric, Greenland Homes, Team Excavating, TammyHeckart.com, Finer Cuts Lawn and Landscape, Des Moines Area Roofing, Quality Traffic Control, Bergen Paulsen, Coverage Direct, Monarch’s, and Revolution Race Gear for their support this season.
