Ian Madsen 13th at National Open
PETERSEN MEDIA- Making his first trip to Williams Grove Speedway in some time, Ian Madsen and the KCP Racing team raced there way into the Champion Racing Oil National Open feature event and picked up a 13th place finish.
“It was good to go in there and make the show,” Ian Madsen said. “I had not been there in quite a few years, and we had never been there as a team and it is a really tough place so to run like we did was a positive.”
The three-day event in Central PA kicked off on Thursday night with Madsen timing in 10th quickest in his qualifying flight. Lining the Logan Contractors Supply, Inc./Aspen Aire/Royal Flooring backed No. 18 up in the third row of his heat race, Madsen would record a fourth place finish and lock into the opening night feature event.
Lining up 16th in the feature, Madsen was focused on running well and accumulating event points that played into Saturday night’s program. Having a tough time getting going, the St. Marys, NSW driver would close the opener out with a 19th place finish.
Back to the famed ½ mile facility on Friday night, Madsen would get off to a better start on this night as he was able to time the Bobcat/Kline Electric/Greenland Homes No. 18 in sixth quickest in time trials before racing to a second place finish in his heat race and earning a spot in the Dash.
Finishing eighth in the Dash after starting seventh, Madsen would take the green flag for Friday’s feature event from the fourth row. Holding strong in the Top-10 for the duration of the night, Madsen would battle with Jason Johnson, Kerry Madsen, and PA standout, Lucas Wolfe as the trio fought for position within the Top-10.
When the checkered flag came out, Madsen would have a great points night as he would finish in the seventh spot and be in good shape heading into Saturday’s National Open finale.
Sitting 13th in event points heading into the finale, Madsen would line up in the second row of his heat race with only to the Top-Four finishers moving into the 40-lap finale.
Battling with Freddie Rahmer for the final transfer position, Madsen would fend him off and punch his ticket to the big show where he would roll off from the 12th starting position.
Racing with the likes of Brent Marks and Lucas Wolfe, Madsen would look to crack the Top-10 as the trio raced hard with each other. Falling as far back as 16th at one point, Madsen would work his way back forward and finish 13th at the checkered flag.
“There is certainly no shame in what we did over the weekend considering the amount of laps we have there,” Madsen said. “The Grove is technical, and I was proud of the guys for working hard and keeping us in the game every time we hit the track.”
Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Team Kline Electric, Greenland Homes, Team Excavating, TammyHeckart.com, Finer Cuts Lawn and Landscape, Des Moines Area Roofing, Quality Traffic Control, Bergen Paulsen, Coverage Direct, Monarch’s, and Revolution Race Gear for their support this season.
