Greenbush Race Park
Delaine, Johnson, and Schill get ROC wins at GRP
High temps and high car counts greeted racers and fans to the Greenbush Race Park this past Saturday as it was the Race of Champions qualifier for the three Wissota classes racing at the Park.
The Midwest Modifieds were up first and they would send 15 cars to take the green flag. National points leader Lance Schill of Langdon, ND, would start on the outside of the front row and showed the rest of the field, that he would be the car to beat. Four cautions slowed the race and every time Schill would get such a great restart that he was never challenged for the lead. Schill went on to win his second in a row and a sweep of the evening. Doyle Erickson of Bagley, MN, would finish second and win his heat, and Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, would finish third. Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, would get the other heat win.
The Streets would send 10 cars for their ROC qualifier. Karlstad, MN, driver Ryan Johnson sat on the outside of the front row and took command early, even threw three early caution flags, Johnson remained out front. Johnson didn't have it easy though, as Jerome Berger of Badger, MN would be there to pounce if Johnson messed up. Berger also had to hold off an early challenge of Greg Jose of Grand Forks, ND and then a late challenge of Kyle Dykhoff of Perham, MN. In the end Johnson would pick up his second win of the year, Berger would finish second and Dykhoff third and win his heat. Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would win the other heat.
Fourteen cars lined up for the Modified feature, and again, outside pole sitter Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, would take the early lead. A pair of yellows on lap seven bunched up the field, and on lap eight Rick Delaine of Stoney Mountain MB, took the lead passing Holtan coming out of corner four. Delaine held the lead through the middle part of the race and Holtan appeared to have regained the lead passing Delaine coming out of corner four, but Holtan slid off the top of corner one and was unable to continue. Delaine went on to pick up his fourth win of the year and a sweep of the evening. Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, would finish second and Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, third. Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, would win the other heat.
Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, led the eight car Lightning Sprint feature to the green, and was gone. The feature was caution free and Dvergsten cruised to his third win of the year. Heat winner Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, finished second and Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, was third.
Pure Stock driver Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, picked up win number five on the year, as he passed A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, late in the race. Austin Brekkestran of Thief River Falls, MN, finished second and Lane third. Darryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, picked up the heat win.
The 4 Cylinder feature came down to a drag race out of corner four as John Current of Wilton, MN, beat Shannon George of Bagley, MN, to the line for his second win of the year. George finished second and Matt Pederson of Lake Park, MN, third. William Foster of Bemidji, MN, won the heat.
The guy to beat in the Outlaw Mini Mods all year has been Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN. Steele picked up win number five and a sweep of the evening as he passed William Dulmage of Ramsey, MN, in corner two on lap six. Blake Ferris of Emo, On, would get beside Steele late in the race but was unable to make the pass, and finish second. John Dulmage of Ramsey, MN, would finish third.
The race season is winding down at the Greenbush Race Park, as just two weekends of racing remain. Up next will be the final visit of the year for the NLRA Late Models. Joining the Late Models will be the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Lightning Sprints. Gates open at 4 pm, with the cutoff for the draw at 6 pm and the racing starts at 7 pm sharp.
