Greenbush Race Park
Alex Truscinski wins third in a row, Balcaen gets Late Model win at GRP.
If you run a race track and you hear there is a chance of "scattered" showers in the forecast, you're thinking please scatter them somewhere else. But as Mother Nature would have it, she scattered some light rain over the Greenbush Race Park about 10 minutes before race time. Officials sent the cars to the pits from packing the track, and let the track sit for about half an hour. After reworking the track and packing it in again, racing got under way 50 minutes later.
Fifteen NLRA Late Models took the track for their feature and it would be pole sitter Mike Balcaen of Winnipeg, MB to take the early lead. Joey Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, was running second when he slid off the top of corner two to bring out the first yellow. On the restart, Steffan Snare of Hallock, MN, spun in corner one and collected five other cars. On the restart, Balcaen resumed his lead and was clearly the car to beat. Brad Seng of Grand Forks, ND, got beside Balcaen with about six to go, but couldn't make the pass. Balcaen would go on to pick up the win, his first at the Race Park since 2008, and a sweep of the evening. Seng would finish second and Troy Schill of Thompson, ND third. Pederson would get the other heat win.
The 13 car Modified feature ran 20 laps caution free. Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB, used his outside front row starting spot to grab the lead, and was never challenged for the top spot as he went on to pick up his third win of the year. A good late race battle for the second and third spot between Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, MB, and Ward Imrie of Winnipeg, MB. Imrie got by Kereluk for second with about four to go but would not be able to catch Delaine. Imrie would finish second and win his heat, Kereluk would finish third. The other heat win went to Jordan Duray of Halma, MN.
Like the Modifieds, the Street feature also ran caution free. Eleven cars took the green flag and pole sitter Doug VanMill of Bagley, MN, was in command from the get go. Waiting to take advantage of any VanMill mistake was Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN. Unfortunately for Gust, VanMill didn't make any, as VanMill went on to get the checkers, his first since 2015, Gust would have to settle for second and a heat win, and Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN would finish third and win his heat.
The Lightning Sprints only had one caution and that came on lap one as Steve Hildebrand of Steinbach, MB, spun in corner one and Clifford Steyn of Lancaster, MN, did his best to slow up but ended up making slight contact with Hildebrand, and putting his car on its side. Mark Williams of Grand Forks, ND was the leader on the restart, but that didn't last long as Mike Schmiedeberg of Lake Bronson, MN, made the pass for the lead in corner two. One lap later, from the fifth starting position, it was Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, making the pass for the top spot in the same corner. Alex would cruise to his third win in a row. Alex’s' dad Alan Truscinski would finish in the second spot and Schmiedeberg would finish third and win his heat. Seventy seven year old Lawrence Veralrud of Oslo, MN, would get the other heat win.
The eight car Pure Stock feature looked like it was going to be a repeat of last week, as A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, grabbed the lead on lap two out of corner four. Lane held the lead through two cautions until he spun in corner four. Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, would inherit the lead, and go on to pick up win number four on the year. Daryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, would finish second and Jeremy Anderson of Newfolden, MN, third. Ryan Anderson of Newfolden, MN, would win the heat.
Up next for the fastest 1/4 mile track in Northwestern Minnesota will be a special for the Streets. Also racing that night will be the Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints, and Outlaw Mini Mods. Check our Facebook page, Official Greenbush Race Park, or our website, http://www.greenbushracepark.com, for payout information. Gates open at 4 pm, cutoff for the draw is at 6 pm, and the racing starts at 7 pm sharp.
