Truscinski and Lane get big paydays at GRP

A much cooler night greeted racers and fans as the second half of the racing season kicked off with the Chad Olson Memorial for the Lightning Sprints and a special for the Pure Stocks here at the Greenbush Race Park.

Mike Tiani of Middle River, MN, would lead the 12 car Modified feature to the green, and looked like the car to beat as the car looked like it was on a rail. A couple of laps in Tiani would have to hold off Halma, MN, driver Jordan Duray. This battle went on for about eight laps, Duray would get along side of Tiani on the straights, but Tiani would pull ahead in the corners. Just after halfway, Stony Mountain, MB, driver Rick Delaine would join in the fun. By lap 14, Delaine would use the high groove to make the pass for the lead coming out of corner four and put it in cruise to go on and pick up his second win of the year and a sweep of the evening. Duray and Tiani weren't done yet as the two battled all the way to the checkered flag, with Duray getting second and Tiani third. Duray would win the other heat.

Twelve cars would take the green flag for the Midwest Modified feature, and the boys didn't want to play nice as three cautions flew before getting one lap in. So race officials put the guys in a "timeout" and made them sit in the infield. While their race was on hold they run the Pure Stock feature, more on that in a bit. So when the MWM feature resumed, Steve Hougard of Strandquist, MN, lead the first couple of laps before giving up the lead to Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN. The second part of the race was caution free as Blacklance picked up his third win of the year, Hougard would finish second and Alex Johnson of Hallock, MN, third. Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, and Jeff Nelson of Perham, MN, won the heats.

The Lightning Sprints went through time trials for the ninth running of the Chad Olson Memorial, and Michael Schmiedeberg of Lake Bronson, MN, would set quickest time with a 13.277 second lap. Schmiedeberg, Alex and Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, would win the heats and that meant the trio would start one, two, and three for the feature. Three early cautions slowed the race, but when they did get to racing Alex T. built up a pretty good lead only to have Schmiedeberg reel him in. The pair had a good race going each working their way through lapped traffic. The final caution came on lap 19, and on the restart Alex T. put distance between him and Schmiedeberg and go on to pick up the win and the big payday. Schmiedeberg would finish second and Eric Johnson of Grand Forks, ND, third.

The most exciting race of the evening in my opinion belonged to the Pure Stocks. Thirteen cars lined up for the feature. Jeremy Anderson of Newfolden, MN, lead the first two laps when after a restart, Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN, would make the pass for the lead coming out of corner four. Caspers would then have to contend with Chad Puschinsky of Bemidji, MN, as the two ran out in front and a great race behind them between Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, Bryon Berger of Badger, MN, Anderson, and Juliann Salazar of Neche, ND, and A.J. Lane of Williams, MN. The last caution came with six to go, and Caspers and Puschinsky would resume their race, but Lane was quietly making his way forward. With two to go Lane was in third, and when the white flag came out Lane used the high line in one and two to make the pass for the lead. Lane would beat everybody back to the checkered flag to pick up his first ever Pure Stock feature win with Caspers and Puschinsky coming home second and third respectively. Anderson and Puschinsky picked up the heat wins.

John Current of Wilton, MN, would pick up the feature win and sweep for the 4-Cylinders and Jim Mulholland of Winnipeg, MB would win the other heat.

Justin Cutrer of International Falls, MN, had to hold off Blake Ferris of Emo, Ont, to pick up his first Greenbush Race Park win in the Outlaw Mini Mods. Ferris and Jerry Larson of Grand Rapids, MN, picked up the heat wins.

Up next for the fastest 1/4 mile track in Northwestern Minnesota, will be the second visit of the year for the NLRA Late Models. Also racing that night will be the Modifieds, Streets, Pure Stocks, and Lightning Sprints. Gates open at 4 pm, cutoff for the draw is 6 pm with the racing starting at 7 pm sharp.
