Greenbush Race Park
A night of close finishes at Greenbush Race Park
The temps were hot and the racing was even hotter at the Greenbush Race Park as 63 cars signed in at the pit gate for the nights racing action.
Only eight cars took the green flag for the Street feature, and Doug VanMill of Bagley, MN, would lead them to the green. VanMill would use his number one starting spot to take the early lead. From his sixth place starting spot, Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, quickly worked his way to the front, and on lap six passed VanMill in corner two for the lead. A caution two laps later put everybody on the bumper of Boen. Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, would pass Boen for the top spot down the backstretch on lap nine. Boen and Blacklance would run side by side for the last five laps, Boen running the bottom and Blacklance running the high groove. The checkered flag was in the air as the duo came out of corner four in a drag race to the finish line, and Boen would get his second in a row. Casey Vargason of Edinburg, ND would finish third. John Halvorson of Warren, MN, would get the heat win.
Not to be outdone by the Streets, the Modifieds also had a photo finish. Outside pole sitter Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, would lead the first couple of laps when Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, MB, passed Duray out of corner four for the lead. Kereluk built up a small advantage over the second and third place cars when the caution came out on lap 12. On the restart Kereluk got out by a couple of car lengths, but Ward Imrie of Winnipeg, MB, restarting fourth, got by Duray and Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, Imrie then set his sights on the leader. Aaron Holtan would make it a three car race for the last few laps. Imrie would get under Kereluk with one to go and the two would be side by side down the back and through three and four and set up a dash to the checkers. At the line it would be Imrie by two thousands of a second for his second win in a row. Holtan would finish third and win his heat; Esala would also pick up a heat win along with Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB.
Austin Overwater of Winnipeg, MB, would lead the Midwest Modified feature to the green and lead the first lap before sliding off the top of three and four. This would hand the lead to Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN. Olson would hold his lead even through two more cautions by running on the bottom. Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, would make it interesting; as he would run the high side and the pair would race side by side for about five laps. Olson was able to get a couple of car lengths on Sobolik and go on to get his first win of the year, Sobolik finished second, and Logan Salazar of Neche, ND third. Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, would get the heat win.
The twelve car Pure Stock feature was also another race that wouldn't be decided until the last lap. A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, jumped to the early lead from his outside front row starting spot. The last caution came on lap five and the restart set up a good four car battle between lane, Austin Brekkestran of Thief River Falls, MN, Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, and Jeremy Anderson of Newfolden, MN. The last four laps Lane and Anderson raced side by side, coming out of four to the white flag there was contact between Lane and Anderson, which slowed them and everyone behind them. In corner two Brekkestran saw his opening and pounced on it to get his first ever win. Palm would finish second and win his heat, Lane would finish third. Stan Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, would win the other heat.
The Outlaw Mini Mod features have been won by only one person this year at the Park, but that would change, as Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, had to watch from the infield as he had mechanical issues before the race started. Blake Ferris of Emo, Ont., would go on to get his first win of the year. Taton Hansen of Spicer, MN, would finish second and Tyler Jonson of International Falls, MN, third. Steele would get the heat win.
Shannon George of Bagley, MN, had to hold off four other cars, in leading all 15 laps to get the 4 Cylinder feature win. Matt Pederson of Fargo, ND would finish second and win his heat, and John Current of Wilton, MN, would finish third. Joel Olson of Karlstad, MN, would win the other heat.
Up next for the Race Park will be the Chad Olson Memorial for the Lightning Sprints, along with a special for the Pure Stocks. Gates open at 4 pm, draw cutoff is 6 pm with the racing starting at 7 pm sharp. For more info visit our website at http://www.greenbushracepark.com, or on Facebook at Official Greenbush Race Park.
