Greenbush Race Park

A night for first time winners at GRP

A mostly cloudy day turned into a beautiful evening for racing at the Greenbush Race Park, and by the time the last checkered flag flew, three drivers picked up their first ever win at the Park while another got his first win of the year.

Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, Mb, would sit on the pole for the 14 car Modified feature and use that starting position to take the early lead, Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, would start outside front row and challenge Kereluk early. Kereluk would hold the top spot through two early cautions, and had at least a straight away lead built up over Esala but the yellow come out with four to go putting everybody on the bumper of the 29K car. Some good racing for the second through fifth spot between Esala, Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, and Rick Delaine of Stoney Mtn., Mb. It took three tries to go back to racing and when the checkered flew it would be Kereluk picking up his first ever feature win at the Park. Esala would finish second and Delaine winning his heat and finishing third. The other heat win went to Jordan Duray of Halma, MN.

Eleven Midwest Modifieds took the track for their feature and outside pole sitter Doyle Erickson of Bagley, MN, would take the early lead. Erickson would hold the lead until lap eight, when first time visitor to the Race Park, Skeeter Estey of Kelly Lake, MN, would pass Erickson coming out of corner four. Estey would cruise to his first ever win at the Park with Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, finishing second and Wyatt Boyum of International Falls, MN, third. Heat wins went to Erickson and Logan Salazar of Neche, ND.

Rookie Steve Nordhagen of Thief River Falls, MN, would lead the 10 Street feature to the green, and he would bring out the first caution as he got crossed up in front of the entire field in corner two. On the restart it would be Rookie Jerome Berger of Badger, MN, losing it at about the same spot as Nordhagen did. When they got to racing, Casey Vargason of Edinburg, ND lead the first lap but was passed by Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN. Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, sat about fifth on the last caution on lap six, and on lap nine was passing Gust on the high side coming out of corner four for the lead. Johnson would go on to get his first win of the year at the Park, Gust would finish second and Vargason would win his heat and finish third. Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would get the other heat win.

Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, would lead the nine car Lightning Sprint feature to the green and lead the first lap. It appeared Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, made a pass for the lead, but a caution wiped that out. On the restart Dvergsten made sure he held onto the lead and cruised to his second feature win of the year and sweep of the evening. Eric Johnson of Grand Forks, ND, would finish second and Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, third.

A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, would take the early lead in the six car Pure Stock feature. Lane had a respectable lead built up before a caution on lap eight would tighten up the pack. Lane was looking for his first ever feature win, but a slight bobble on lap 12 would let Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, take over the lead. Palm would get the checkers for his second win of the year and a sweep of the evening. Darryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, finished second and Lane third.

Joel Olson of Karlstad, MN, would use his front row starting spot to lead all 15 laps in the eight car 4 Cylinder feature. This would be Olson's first ever 4 Cylinder feature win. Katie Ahrndt of Moorhead, MN, won a tough battle with John Current of Wilton, MN, to finish second, and Current third.

Up next for the fastest 1/4 mile dirt track in Northwestern Minnesota, the NOSA Sprints will make their lone appearance for the year, racing with the Sprints that night will be the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Lightning Sprints and Pure Stocks. Gates open at 4 pm, with the cutoff for the draw at 6 pm and the green flag dropping at 7 pm sharp.
