Strand, Hunter, Steele, Heintz, and Dykhoff get checkers at GRP

Some say that if you want to cure a drought, open a racetrack because it's sure to rain on race day. And once again Mother Nature was going to have a say in the nights racing action at the Greenbush Race Park. The pit gates opened at 4pm, and the dark clouds rolled in at 4:05. But Mother Nature decided to give us a break and only give us a few light sprinkles and the racing would go on.

It was the third annual "Duggan" Nelson memorial for the Midwest Modifieds and Hunter Hougard of Warren, MN, would lead the 20 car field to the green. But the yellow would fly early and often, nine times in all. Hougard would lead most of the race, and was challenged for the top spot on nearly every lap. Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, and Mike Nichols of Watertown, SD were the main rivals. The last caution flew on lap 19 of the 25 lap feature and Austin Hunter of Winnipeg, MB, who started seventh, had quietly worked his way into the second spot. Hunter looked for a way to get around Hougard for the next couple of laps and finally made the pass for the lead coming out of corner four with three to go and go on to pick up the win. Hougard would finish second and Blacklance third. The heat wins went to Hougard, Nichols, Reise Stenberg of Argusville, ND and Doyle Erickson of Bagley, MN.

The NLRA Late Models made their first visit of the year for the Jack Grahn Memorial and it would be Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, MN, to lead the 16 car field to the green. Strand would use that front row starting spot to jump to the lead. But Bill Mooney of Selkirk, Mb., and Brad Seng of Grand Forks, ND, wouldn't let Strand get to far away as both drivers took turns at challenging for the lead, but neither could get close enough to make a pass. A late caution on lap 20 would put the entire field on the bumper of Strand, who had already lapped about half of the field, but Strand would go on to get the win and the sweep of the evening, Seng would finish second and Joey Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, third. Mooney would win his heat and finish fifth.

Like Strand, Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, would use his front row starting spot to take the early lead in the 10 car Street feature. Boen would hold his lead through two cautions but was challenged by Kyle Dykhoff of Perham, MN, for most of the second half of the race. Dykhoff would get to the back of Boen going into three and four and then play a little bump and run to take the lead with two to go and go on to get the checkers and a sweep of the evening. Boen would finish second and Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, third. Johnson would win the other heat.

The 10 car Pure Stock feature also had a handful of cautions in their feature, and Darryl Heintz of East. St. Paul, MB, would start third but grab the lead and not look back. Heintz would never get to far ahead because of the yellows, and had to hold of challenges from a few drivers, including sophomore driver Austin Brekkestran of Thief River Falls, MN., but Heintz would hold everyone off to pick up his second win of the year, Brekkestran would finish second and A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, third. Ryan Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, would pick up the heat win.

Blake Ferris of Emo, Ont., would start 4th in the six car Outlaw Mini Mod feature and grab the early lead. Ferris would hold the top spot until lap 11 when Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, would make the pass for the lead coming out of corner four. Steele would pick up the win and the sweep and remain undefeated in feature races at the Race Park.

Next up at the Race Park will be a regular night of racing featuring Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints, and 4 Cylinders. Gates open at 4 pm, cutoff for the draw is 6 pm with the racing starting at 7 pm sharp.
