Greenbush Race Park
Wahl, Blacklance, Dvergsten get opening night checkers at GRP
It was a beautiful Saturday evening to start the 2018 WISSOTA dirt track series at the Greenbush Race Park, as 68 cars signed in each hoping to take home their first checkered flag of the season.
Twelve Modifieds took the green flag for their feature and it would be pole sitter Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN taking early command of the race. Wahl was in control for most of the race even through four caution flags. The real race was for the second through fifth spot between Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, MB, Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, and Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB, Duray and Teunis swapped the second and third spot a couple of times during the race while both drivers had to hold off Kereluk and Delaine. Late in the race Duray was able to separate himself from the other three drivers and put some pressure on Wahl, but it would be Wahl claiming the win with Duray a close second. Kereluk would get by Teunis for the third spot. Heat wins went to Delaine and Kereluk.
The Street feature had 10 cars taking the green flag; outside pole sitter Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, would jump to the early lead. Eric Riley of Morris, MN, would start seventh, and by lap four passed John Halvorson of Warren, MN, for the second spot. Four laps later Riley would pass Gust for the lead coming out of corner four and go on to pick up his first Race Park feature win. Kyle Dykhoff of Perham, MN, would get by Gust for the second spot with three to go. Gust would finish in the third spot also picking up the win in his heat. Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, picked up the other heat win.
An unusually small Midwest Modified field only had six cars lineup for their feature and it would be Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, sweeping the evening. New father Logan Salazar of Neche, ND came home second and Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, third.
Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, would lead the 12 car Lightning Sprint feature to the green, and was in control early. Dvergsten had a half lap lead over second place Parker Monroe of Grand Forks, ND when the races only caution flew for Presley Truedson of Kennedy, MN, when she spun in corner four. On the restart Dvergsten would again take command of the race, but Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, restarting in the number five spot, would pass both Monroe and Zak Kwiatkoski of Grand Forks, ND to claim the second spot. Dvergsten would go on to get the win and the sweep of the evening, Truscinski would finish second and win the other heat, and Kwiatkoski would finish third.
Daryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, would cruise to the win in the six car Pure Stock feature. A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, and Chad Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, had quite a race for the second and third spot as the pair would race side by side for 2/3 of the race before Lane was finally able to shake Hagen for the second spot. Hagen would finish third. Lane and Ryan Weston of Roseau, MN, would pick up the heat wins.
William Foster of Bemidji, MN, would take the lead on lap four of the 13 car 4 Cylinder feature. John Current of Wilton, MN, would get close to Foster, but couldn't make a pass. Foster would sweep the evening, Current would finish second and win his heat and Brandon Rehill of St. Andrews, MB, would finish third. Denis Seguin of Winnipeg, MB would win the other heat.
Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, would start seventh in the eight car Outlaw Mini Mod feature and when they come by the flag stand the first time Steele would be out in front and cruise to the win and a sweep of the evening. Blake Ferris of Emo, Ont, would finish second and win his heat and Justin Cutrer of International Falls, MN would finish third.
Up next for the fastest 1/4 track in Northwestern Minnesota will be another regular night of racing featuring the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints and 4 Cylinders. Gates open at 4pm with the draw cutoff at 6pm and racing starts at 7pm sharp. Follow us online at http://www.greenbushracepark.com, or on Facebook at Official Greenbush Race Park.
