Midwest Legends Dirt Series
MLDS Shines at Nationals
York Haven, PA (October 15th, 2024) - After a long and grueling season, sixteen different drivers with Midwest Legends Dirt Series ties made their way to BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pennsylvania for the 28th Legend Car Dirt Nationals.
The MLDS was one of the most represented series at the event, with fifteen of the seventy drivers, just over 22%, having raced at least one MLDS event this season. Some drivers came into the event with a shot at a championship, including 2024 MLDS Champion Jackson Lewis, Young Lions racer Brady Ascherien, Masters division driver Glenn Mitchell, and others.
Friday night, drivers had an up and down heat night, with a handful of drivers picking up solid heat race finishes. After a hard-fought battle, the Bassett Fastest Qualifier Dirt Challenge race saw Jackson Lewis do what he does best, win.
Feature night was on Saturday. In the Young Lions division, Cohen Henze was the highest finisher with a third-place finish. Brady Ascherien finished fourth with Talyn Neuman finishing eighth after running into issues and being forced to retire after leading laps early on. The drama unfolded after the feature as championship leader Ty Olson was disqualified for a post-race infraction, meaning he lost all of his championship points for the event which would promote Ascherien to the top of the points standings. Brady Ascherien was officially crowned the 2024 Young Lions Dirt Champion on Monday following INEX’s confirmation.
No drivers had a shot at the Semi-Pro championship, but that wouldn’t stop them from putting on a show. Hayden Schmuhl started the feature in last place after his car ran into issues and was lent a car from the Legends.Direct team. He managed to race his way up sixteen-spots to finish in fourth and pick up the hard charger spot. Adam Meyer had a rough go of it, not finishing the feature.
The Pro division was a simple battle, finish the best and you are the champion. Jackson Lewis was tied with North Dakota’s Preston Martin. Lewis started in fourth and stayed at the front, finishing a strong third, and picking up the 2024 Pro Dirt Championship. Michael Weber finished fourth and Jordan Miklas fifth, rounding out a strong run for some MLDS front runners. Griffin McGrath and Ryan Braseth did not finish the race, and Eric Blumer did not start.
The final feature of the night was the Masters division. Glenn Mitchell came into the night with a chance at the championship and needed a twelve-point night. Unfortunately, Mitchell would come seven-points short in the end after a fourth-place finish. Other MLDS finishers included Jeff Schmidt in seventh, Schott Richardson in eighth, and Keith Meyer in nineteenth, not finishing the race.
In a more familiar state, Dallas Ross picked up the feature win over Art Hahn and Ryan Mech in a field of fourteen cars.
