Apfelbeck Regains Points Lead With Win
With the race season winding down, every points night brings more intense racing action as every points contender attempts to gain every last point they can. This was no exception on Sunday, August 12 at Angell Park as Pearson, Apfelbeck, Sullivan, and Mech all fought to collect more points in the tight points race.
The night started off with some intense heat races. Some new faces helped increase the car count which created some jam packed heats with multiple previous feature winners in each heat. Mike Mueller started on the pole of the first heat and led from green to checkered. Bille Lehmann and Cody Apfelbeck battled back and forth during the heat as they attempted to find a way against Mueller, but were unsuccessful in doing so. Jim Bucher was able to pick up the win in the second heat race after struggling for a good portion of the season.
The feature was led to the green by Jim Bucher and Bille Lehmann. Bucher jumped out to an early lead as Cody Apfelbeck started to pick his way through the field. Apfelbeck was able to run Bucher down thanks to a caution early on. A second caution saw Ryan Mech make his way into the top three to join the battle. On the restart on lap 10, Cody Apfelbeck was challenged for the lead by Ryan Mech who was riding the cushion while Apfelbeck and Bucher stayed on the bottom. Mech led until lap 15 when he jumped the cushion and Apfelbeck and Bucher made their way back to 1st and 2nd (respectively). Apfelbeck opened up a small gap and was able to hold off Bucher for the rest of the race.
With this win, Cody Apfelbeck took over the lead in the points race. Ryan Mech sits just two points behind him, and Justin Pearson sits seven points behind. The final race of the WLRDS points season will take place at 141 Speedway on Sunday, September 2nd.
