Midwest Legends Dirt Series
A New Face and a Familiar One Both Visit Victory Lane
This past weekend saw both a new winner to the WLRDS while another competitor continued their domination with an exciting feature win.
The series started their two-race weekend in Darlington, Wisconsin for the make up of the Lafayette County Fair race. The track was in good shape for the heat races and saw very competitive racing in both heat races. Warren Ropp and Dave Eberle collected wins in close battles for the top spot.
The feature started with Eric Barth taking an early lead. Barth was showcasing the new motor for the US Legends Cars as it was one of the first ones on dirt. Barth led the first few laps with Mike Mueller and Ryan Sullivan closing in. Ryan Sullivan took the lead and never looked back. The young gun had never won a feature before but the nerves did not get to him. Sullivan led the feature the rest of the way to the end. The battle behind him was close as Mueller and Barth traded the second spot back and forth while Ryan Mech trailed behind them. The finishing order was Sullivan, Barth, Warren Ropp, and Ryan Mech rounding out the top 4.
Saturday moved to Beaver Dam Raceway for a non-points night. This meant that a draw/redraw was in effect. Cody Apfelbeck started on the outside of the front row and took an early lead in what many thought would be an easy win. Ryan Mech hung on to second place with Mike Mueller and Eric Barth challenging him for the entire race. A mid-race caution allowed the field to bunch up and Justin Pearson made a charge to the front. In the final laps it was apparent that Pearson had the fastest car there, but the question was if he had the time to catch Apfelbeck. The two had separated themselves from the rest of the field and Pearson made his final move coming out of turn 4 and got the win by just a fraction of a second. Apfelbeck came home in second place, Ryan Mech was third, Mike Mueller was fourth, and Eric Barth rounded out the top 5.
This upcoming weekend sees the series going to Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday and Angell Park Speedway on Sunday night.
