Cam Schafer Gets First TSCS Win At OWN

Cam Schafer Races To First TSCS Win At Open Wheel Nationals
St. Croix Falls, WI

The second night of the 2nd Annual Open Wheel Nationals brought much improved weather, and the UMSS Traditional Sprint Car Series would see a first-time winner grace Victory Lane at the conclusion of the 25 lap feature race. Running both his winged and non-winged sprint car during the weekend, Glenwood, Minnesota driver Cam Schafer scored his first career TSCS feature win in dominating fashion. Schafer started fifth on the grid in the 14 car field and wasted little time in getting to the top spot. Friday night winner Kevin Bradwell led the opening lap before Schafer drove underneath him on lap two and set sail for 25 nonstop laps. Schafer stretched his lead to a comfortable margin and was never challenged for the top spot.

For the second night in a row, Rob Caho, Jr. was high point driver following the heats. Caho redrew the #6 pill for the feature race invert. Once again Kevin Bradwell benefited from the redraw and lined up on the pole position. The race was under yellow on the opening lap for a spin by Tom Porter. On the next attempt, it would go clean and green to the checkers. Bradwell jumped up on the thin cushion to lead the opening lap, but fifth starter Cam Schafer was lightning fast on the bottom and moved past four cars in less than two laps to capture the lead. Schafer would pull away from the field during the remainder of the race. Lucas Milz turned in a fine drive to finish second well ahead of the battle for third. 2012 TSCS Rookie of the Year Denny Stordahl won out in the race for third place ahead of series point leader and defending champion Rob Caho, Jr. and rookie driver Mike Mueller. Completing the top ten was Johnny Parsons III, Bradwell, Jeff Pellersels, Jack Clark and rookie Brian VanMeveren. Only Katrina Sautbine was unable to finish the 25 lap main event.

Caho won the first heat with Schafer topping the second heat race. The traditional sprints have their first three race weekend coming up with a regular program at the St. Croix Valley Raceway on July 5 followed by their first-ever Northern Tour with stops at the Hibbing Raceway on July 6 and the Proctor Speedway July 7. The UMSS winged sprints will also be in action at Hibbing and Proctor.
