Kenny Edkin Returns to Victory Lane for 8th Win of 2019

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Kenny Edkin and his crew continue to tinker with his car to make it better for the Super Sportsman 100, which takes place in a few weeks.

You would think everything would be status quo. Edkin’s had the dominant car in BAPS Super Sportsman competition and wouldn’t want to change anything that has been working.

But, that’s not the case. Edkin and Co. have kept searching for speed and momentum at BAPS Motor Speedway, and it seems to be paying off week after week.

Edkin did it again on Saturday night. He blasted to the front and was the quickest car down the stretch in the 25-lap main event, which ended with the point leader sitting in Victory Lane for the eighth time this season and 16th overall at the speedway.

“That was exciting, wasn’t it,” Edkin said. “I think we had a better car on the bottom, which is what we’ve been working on. We tried some different things. Don keeps digging here, trying to find some more momentum on the bottom of the track. I think we had that tonight.

“This car, it’s a really good long-run car. We’ve won all the 40 laps. We just come on at the end of the race. If you look at race monitor, I bet we ran our fastest laps at the end of the show. I’m really excited for the 100. Don hasn’t gotten one of them yet, and I want to get it for him.”

Edkin is the favorite.

Of course, that’s the case every time he touches the speedway. It was no different on Saturday despite his ninth-place starting spot.

Scott Grace grabbed the early lead from his pole starting spot. Paul Miller, who started sixth, carved his way to the front and surged into the lead by the end of the fourth circuit.

Once Miller got out front, he built a sizable lead over the field. As the laps clicked by, Edkin slowly made his way to the front, but he was 2.3 seconds in arrears by the time he took over the second position.

“The car was rolling on the curb really well,” Edkin said. “I think we were a little tight up there, because I kept getting above it in one and two.

“I was pushing even harder. I kept losing momentum in one and two but was able to cheat it on entry in three. Once I got up there [on the curb], I was really making steam.”

Edkin chopped into Miller’s lead and made a bid for the lead but came up short. He tried it again, this time on the high side, and was able to drive past Miller by the completion of Lap 24.

“I went to the bottom there and didn’t clear him, and was like, ‘Oh, crap, I showed my nose,’” Edkin said. “He, for some reason, went to the bottom, and I’m like, ‘OK, if you are going to the bottom, I’m going back to the top.’

“I’m not sure if he thought the bottom was in … I mean, it was good, and he made good momentum down there. It just took me a couple of laps to get back by him.”

Continued Edkin, “Man, this car goes anywhere and everywhere. Doug, Don, Adam, Paul, my brother, everyone on this car, they keep digging week after week trying to make up more speed and momentum.”

Edkin cruised over the last lap and took the win ahead of Miller. Russ Mitten stormed from 15th to third, with Grace and Scott Dellinger completing the top five. Tyler Wolford, Edkin, and Rich Eichelberger were heat winners for the 24-car Super Sportsman field.

Troy Miller was the third and last different leader in capturing an entertaining 20-lap main event for the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model Division.

Tyler Kirby led the first eight circuits from his pole-starting spot, before Chase Billet took over on the ninth circuit. Miller, who started ninth on the grid, charged to the front and passed Billet on Lap 15 and led the rest of the way to claim the win.

Billet settled for second, with Bobby Beard, Randy Stoudt, and Alan Sagi completing the top five. Kirby, Sagi, and Billet were heat winners for the 22-car field.

In Superior Homes Extreme Stock action, Patrick McClane topped the 13-car field in the 20-lap main event. He took the lead on Lap 4 from Matt Wampler.

Travis Horan finished second, with Wampler, Donnie Broderick, and Austin Hogue completing the top five. Sam Rial and McClane were heat winners.

The Road Warriors had a pair of 15-lap main events. Chris Anderson was the winner of the $1,000 June 1st make up feature, with Eric Boozel taking the win in the nightcap.
