Kenny Edkin Wins Again At BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa. (8/17/19): Kenny Edkin admitted that he wasn’t comfortable in the car his last three wins at BAPS Motor Speedway.

The plan was to come to a Wednesday Test-and-Tune session, but Edkin thought it was going to rain. So, the Marysville driver had to throw something different at the car during Saturday’s Features Only program.

To say it worked is an understatement. Not only was Edkin dominant, he felt comfortable throughout the 25-lap BAPS Paint Super Sportsman main event and earned his seventh victory of the season the speedway.

“This is race No. 15, and I believe this is the 15th different thing we’ve tried with the car,” Edkin said. “Those guys better be careful, because I think we found something that makes me comfortable.

“Confidence is a big thing. My guys, Doug, Don, Adam, Paul, my brother, they make sure we have the right tools to do this, and we just need to keep performing at our best. I believe the only way we get beat is if we beat ourselves.”

The beginning of the race was marred by red flag on the opening lap. Chase Gutshall crashed, and fuel leaked onto the speedway. It took 25 minutes for the track crew to clean up the spill.

When the race, finally, went green, second-place starter Steve Fannasy beat Mike Enders into Turn 1 and took the lead. Edkin followed soon after and started to reel in the leader.

Edkin stalked Fannasy for a couple of laps before charging into the top spot on Lap 10. Once out front, he carved up the racing surface and the lapped traffic to build a six-second advantage.

“I was able to get through lapped traffic really well, even though I threw a couple of moves I shouldn’t have,” Edkin said. “I didn’t know where guys were.

“I knew I had good momentum, but you don’t know when you are out front of you’ve got six seconds or six tenths. So, one bad corner can put you behind.”

Timmie Barrick stopped to bring out the caution on Lap 23. Bruce Buckwalter spun on the restart to give Scott Dellinger another crack.

Edkin was up to task. He had the field covered on the restart and sped away to his 15th overall victory at BAPS Motor Speedway, which puts him second on the all-time win list at speedway.

“I really like the history part of it,” Edkin said. “I have two more I want to get this season to tie my buddy Ken Bricker, so we’re going to try and do it.”

Ben Whitaker captured an entertaining Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event, pulling off a late-race pass on Chase Billet.

Billet started third on the grid and slipped past pole-sitter Jennifer Hartz and Corry Gingerich on Lap 1. Whitaker, meanwhile, started 13th and was starting to plow his way to the front.

It looked like Billet was going to add to his win total at the speedway. Whitaker had other ideas and drove past the leader on Lap 19. He led the last two circuits and went on to take the win.

Billet settled for second, with Bobby Beard placing eighth. Charles Potts and 12th-place starter Alan Sagi completed the top five.

Chad Smith charged from 12th to take the win in the Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stocks feature.

Eddie Richards started on the outside pole and took the lead at the start. Smith stormed through the field and overtook Richards on the ninth circuit. He led the rest of the way to take the victory.

Brian Walls came from 17th to second. Will Walls, Jason Townsend, and Jim Palm completed the top five.

Sam Rial added another win to his resume’ in the 20-lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock main. He came from fourth to take the win.

Tim Berkheimer led the first two circuits, with Patrick McClane taking over on Lap three. Rial grabbed the top spot on Lap 6.

McClane finished second. Andrew Hogue finished third but didn’t pass tech. Jeff Gill, Jeff Dillon, and John Wright completed the top five.

The Central Pa. Legends feature was a wild affair that featured 10 caution periods, four lead changes and three different leaders. Jeremy Ott was standing at the end and took the win in the 20-lap feature.

Tim Schabram led the first five laps, with Ott, who started fourth, taking the lead on Lap 6. His lead was short-lived, as Billy Workman Jr. blew by and appeared to be on his way to the win.

But, Ott wasn’t done. He made one last bid and pulled off a last-lap pass to steal away the win. Workman was second, followed by Travis McClelland, Seth Kearchner, and Austin Bellemare.
