Kenny Edkin Scores 5th Super Sportsman Victory of 2019

YORK HAVEN, Pa. (7/13/19): Kenny Edkin had a little extra motivation heading into this week’s BAPS Super Sportsman main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.

It wasn’t about a point title or simply another win to get back on track after some minor struggles the last couple of weeks. Instead, Edkin wanted to honor a childhood friend who was more like family.

So, Edkin came out to the Test and Tune last Wednesday night at the York Haven facility. He wanted to make sure everything was in place heading into Saturday Night’s Brandon Barthel Memorial.

Edkin put on a proud performance. He stormed to the front and dominated the second half of the event to claim the prestigious event and bank a $2,000 payday for his fifth win of the season.

“I’ve got to thank Danny Miller,” Edkin said. “He gives us a hell of a power-plant every week. We’ve been struggling a little it, and I thought we had some motor issues. I think it ended up that we were just getting the car too into the track and pulling the motor down.

“We came down to Test and Tune, because we really wanted this race. Brandon was a good friend of mine, and we won it.”

Continued Edkin, “I’ve known them most of my life. Brandon and I grew up together, so this one was for my friend.”

Edkin started 11th on the grid and picked up a few positions on the initial start. It was called back, however, when Adam Wray and Dave Hollar were involved in an incident and brought out the caution.

It only delayed Edkin’s progress. Jay Fannasy jumped out front from his pole starting spot, while Edkin charged through the field.

Fannasy held the point until fifth-place starter Russ Mitten took over on Lap 7. Mitten was good up front in clean air and was a candidate to sit in Victory Lane, but that changed when the fly wheel broke and he stopped before Lap 14 was complete.

Edkin cruised through the top five and took over the lead when Mitten slowed. Frankie Herr was also coming through the field, but he was no match for Edkin, who went on to score the win by a gaudy 4.08 seconds.

“That first start, it was a hell of a start,” Edkin said. “When it got called back, I thought, ‘Oh, crap, maybe I showed my hand too soon.’

“It would have been a race between Russ and I. I was, definitely, even with him, but being even with him and passing him are too different things. It’s a shame for that team, they’ve had a lot of bad luck this season.”

Herr, who started 10th, came up to second. Paul Miller was third ahead of 22nd-place starter Scott Dellinger. Garrett Williamson came from 12th to complete the top five. Williamson, Mike Enders, and Miller were heat winners for the 25-car field.

Chase Billet completed an impressive run to capture the Creekside Auto Sales Limited Late Model Carl Billet Memorial, a race that honored his uncle.

The field didn’t have a chance in this one. Billet set quick time for the 27-car field and started second in the A-Main. He got by Ben Whitaker on Lap 3 and never looked back over the 30-lap distance.

Whitaker was second, followed by Randy Stoudt, Tommy Slanker, and Alan Sagi. Bruce Kane, Sagi, and Daulton Bigler were heat winners. Chuck Cox III won the consolation.

Jason Townsend took the lead on Lap 11 and set the pace the rest of the way to capture the 20-Lap Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stock main event.

Brian Walls started on the point and jumped out to the early lead, beating Kyle Saylor through the first and second corner. Townsend, who started third, wasted little time getting to the front.

He tracked down the leaders and made his bid for the win just past the halfway point. Once he disposed of Walls, he led the rest of the way for the win, despite a pair of caution flags to bunch up the field.

Walls settled for second, with Chad Smith, Bud Witmer, and Eddie Richards completing the top five. Smith and Townsend were heat winners for the 20-car field.

Jorjie Sweger won a wild Pizza Shop of Etters Central Pa. Legends presented by Baker Door Company 20-Lap main event.

Ott, the defending series champion jumped out front. Sweger, who started on the pole, stalked the leader for five circuits before taking the lead coming out of the second corner on the 14th circuit.

But, Ott didn’t go away. There was a late caution that set up a two-lap dash to the finish. Ott went into the last corner and got into Sweger, who somehow gained control and came across the line backwards.

Ott crossed the line first but was disqualified for rough-riding, and Sweger was declared the winner. Alex Robinson was second, followed by Austin Bellemare, Greg Burd, and Troy Mrokovich. Triple T Camp Hard Charger was Travis McClelland, who advanced from 28th to 17th.

Josh Schrum, Mason Chaney, Zac Smith, and Ott were heat winners for the 40-car field. Rick Hartwig and Travis Perry won the twin consolations.
