Ian Madsen Caps Rookie of the Year Campaign with Win at World Finals
PETERSEN MEDIA- Continuing to find himself in the mix as the season wound down, Ian Madsen capped his Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series off nicely as he won the opening night of the World Finals.
“It is great to get another Outlaw win, and really give us a shot in the arm as we close the season and start to prepare for our 2019 campaign,” Ian Madsen said. “It was a grueling year, and to win during one of the biggest weekend’s of the year feels great.”
Madsen kicked his final weekend of action off nicely as he got timed in for Friday’s program third quickest in his flight during Thursday night’s twin qualifying session.
Playing a waiting game with Mother Nature on Friday, things would get going much later than scheduled but it did not phase the St. Marys, NSW pilot fended off older brother, Kerry, to win his heat race and punch his ticket into the Dash.
Running second in Dash No. 1, Madsen would line up third for the feature event that would ultimately get pushed back to Saturday afternoon as the Friday night program had reached the North Carolina mandated curfew.
Returning to the track Saturday for the final day of racing action in 2018, Madsen would continue to flex his muscle as he surged to the lead off of turn four to complete the opening lap when the curfew delayed feature came to life.
Leading the way on the dry, slick surface, Madsen would get relegated back to second on the fifth lap as Shane Stewart grabbed ahold of the cushion and surged into the race lead.
Lap 13 saw Stewart endure problems and Madsen would regain control of the race lead. Looking cool, calm, and collected out front, Madsen would keep the field at bay as he raced his way to his first feature event win of the 2018 season.
When the originally scheduled Saturday night program came to life, Madsen would find himself battling for a Dash spot in his heat race until a late mechanical failure dashed those hopes and placed him in the ‘B’.
Wiring the field in the LCS, Madsen would move into the feature where he would take the green flag from the 19th starting position for the final feature event on the season.
On a slick and racy Charlotte Dirt Track, Madsen would work his way forward slowly as he would take what the track gave him from the back of the pack.
When the final checkered flag of the 2018 season flew, the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year winner would cross the finish line with a 14th place finish.
Capping his first run at the World of Outlaws Tour, Madsen ends his season eighth in the final points tallying one feature event win, eight top-five finishes, and 31 Top-10’s.
“I really have to thank everyone at KCP Racing for making this all a reality,” Ian Madsen said. “We started this deal to contend for Knoxville Raceway Championships, and to now be a full fledged World of Outlaws team is pretty special, and I am thankful to have been here from the start. Thanks to my guys for all of their hard work..I am already looking forward to 2019.”
Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Kline Electric, Ted’s Body Shop, Team Excavating, Greenland Homes, Finer Cuts Lawn and Landscape, American Express, TammyHeckart.com, Quality Traffic Control, BergenKDV, Coverage Direct, P1 Race Wear, Monarch’s, and BK Racing Titanium for their support this season.
