HMS Update - Hall of Fame Classic
Tonight was the first night for me behind the wheel of a nonwing 410 sprint car with the USAC National guys and it ended up being a pretty good one in the end. I drew pill #15 which meant I was the sixth car to go out for qualifying. The track was tacky and fast with a slick black streak on entry to turn 1 and I was able to put together two decent laps to qualify 11th out of 31 cars. That meant I was in the top 24 invert and I started 4th in the 3rd heat. On the start I got plastered with mud and it happened to fold back the tear offs so I struggled the first couple laps trying to get it off. Once I was able to see adequately, I found myself in 7th and was only able to make it back to 6th, putting me in the semi starting 3rd. I struggled in the semi with keeping the front end on the ground, popping a few wheelstands but I was able to transfer in 4th. I got my time back and started the A feature from 11th. By this time the track was black slick from top to bottom with a very narrow groove of moisture on the bottom. This lent itself to a one groove racetrack in which it was tough to make any moves but in the end I was able to bring it home with a top 10 in 9th. I'm proud of our first showing with USAC and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
