Helliwell Dominates Oktoberfest!
Two days, 3 different kinds of cars, six races and 5 wins pretty much sum up Wayne Helliwell Jr’s dominance of the 2011 Lee USA Speedway’s Oktoberfest.
Helliwell sent the fans at the track and the social message boards a buzz when Saturday alone he won heat races in the Pro Stocks, Late Models and 350 Supermodifieds divisions. The night cap was a 34 car, 100 lap Pro Stock race.
Wayne would start 11th on the grid after a 12 car inversion. Bidding his time and being patient Wayne took the lead just past the halfway mark. Having to survive multiple late race cautions, Wayne cruised to his second Super Late Model win of the year piloting the Bruce Bernhardt-owned Ford Fusion.
Sunday would bring Wayne much of the same as Saturday, where once again the inversion put him 12th on the grid for the Late Model main event. Wasting little time getting to the front Wayne would lead before the 20 lap mark. Even a late charge from veteran Larry Gelinas was no match as Wayne would take the victory by 8 car lengths. The sixth and final event would put him back behind the wheel of his NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Championship Witkum brothers 350 Supermodified. A 7th place starting spot and a caution free race race brought the winning streak to an end with a solid 3rd place finish to close out the weekend. Summing up Oktoberfest Wayne said, “What a dream weekend this was. I can’t thank all the guys on all the cars enough; this was true team effort all weekend. It would have been interesting if we had yellow during the Super race. I think we had something for them, we just ran out of laps. I have no complaints, these guys did a great job with the cars. Nothing like winning in front of your home crowd like this after being on the road all year. Its hard to put something like this into words, its just awesome.” (Rich Hayes Photo)
