2 vs. 4 at the Turkey Derby

When you read 2 vs 4 in racing your thought usually consists of the tires; how many were or were not taken during the course of a race. In the case of this years Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium Speedway in Wall, NJ it was the amount of barrels in the carburetor. The Bernhardt Motorsports team made their way down to the Jersey Shore for the annual “Turkey Derby” only to be surprised by a rule change when they arrived. The track had made the decision to allow the use of 4 barrel carburetors. “We came with the rules package we talked to the track about just this week. We didn’t get the memo.” said Wayne. The team was left to race against cars that had 75 more horsepower than their 347Jr Ford crate motor. Helliwell nearly pulled off the impossible, even with the disadvantage. Wayne clicked off the second fasted lap time in qualifying. After a redraw that had him start 5th it only took a few laps to get to the front. A trip that included a brief front-stretch Joey Chitwood like ride on two wheels before settling into second place. He would spend the final 25 laps neck and neck with Jarrod Hayes to cross the finish line with a solid second place. Even though Wayne did not win, he was still happy with the results, “ We had a really good car today. I think we had the better car out of the two of us. He (Jarrod Hayes) did a what he had too, my hat is off to him. I have to thank Bruce and the crew for making the trip down here. I love this track; I wish we could race here more than once a year. We can’t complain, the car is one piece (minus a left front fender) and we did all we could do. We wanted to end the year with a win; we just got beat by a carburetor.”
