Eric Schulz
4th of July Weekend
This 4th of July weekend was a fun one for Eric and the crew. Friday night was spent topless with the HRA in Rock Rapids, IA on a dry, slick, middle of the summer type of track. The crew started trying a few different things to make the new non-wing car work better and it seems that they are going in the right direction. Eric started tenth in the feature and wound up fifth, here is his take on the race. “The car really came of the corner nice, everyone huddled down to the bottom and there wasn’t a whole lot on top to hold the car. A guy had to be patient and wait to make his move.” Eric displayed great patience and found a little moisture at the bottom of the front stretch that helped propel him by a couple of drivers. “It was an elbows up kind of night, a little bumpin’ and pushin’ by everyone, you really had to protect the bottom.”
Saturday the crew drove over to Jackson, MN to drive for Dick Veekners and came to the completely opposite track as Rocky the night before. You could tell that it was going to be tacky and fast! Kent “Louie” Franks and Dick Schulz (Eric’s Dad) put their heads together and came up with an awesome set up. “I could tell that I was fast through the corners, it was the end of those long half-mile straights that we were lacking a little” explained Eric, “it was an absolute joy to drive!”
There was unfortunately one red flag during the race (everyone was ok) and while the drivers were waiting to get going again, it was apparent that there was something wrong inside the car with Eric. After the race we found out that the strap that tightens Eric’s arm restraint had come un-wound and stuck in a part of the seat, locking down Eric’s left arm. “That was something else, for about five or six laps my arm was locked down and I had to steer with one arm only. I’ve heard of guys having to do this because they only have one arm, but it really wears on you when you’re not used to it.” The car owner was very pleased with Eric’s performance and told him “I wish I could give you the horses (power) that these guys have, but we’ll just have to make do.”
There was a grand fireworks show at the end of both nights to really set of the July 4th holiday and Eric’s birthday which is on the 6th! Eric is looking forward to getting his 410 motor back and the car back on the track. Keep tabs on how things are going at www.ericschulzracing.com or on facebook at www.facebook/ericschulzracing.com. The crew is getting ready for next weekend where you can find Eric at Rock Rapids again on Friday night and Jackson on Saturday! See you at the races!!
