Recap of Western Spring Shootout at Stockton
The early season West Coast swing in ‘The Golden State’ for the World of Outlaws continued this past weekend for Craig Dollansky and the Destiny Motorsports #7 team as they took to Stockton Dirt Track for the FVP Western Spring Shootout.
Back at the 3/8-mile bullring for the first time since the Greatest Show on Dirt made their inaugural appearance in 2013, Dollansky went out early in qualifying posting the 14th fastest lap of the 39 drivers. Starting alongside Californian Tim Kaeding on the front row of heat two, ‘The Crowd Pleaser’ battled for the lead with Kaeding before taking the win to secure a spot in the dash.
Finishing fifth in the dash meant the Aggressive Hydraulics backed sprinter would start the 30-lap A-Main from inside row three. Slipping back a few spots before a yellow on lap 8, Dollansky battled a tight handling race car as the main event continued and fell back in the pack before pulling in on lap 22.
“We were able to win our heat race and start on the pole of the dash but unfortunately went backwards in the dash and then again in the main event,” commented Dollansky. “I finally just dropped out of the race and took it to the trailer. We can’t tear up equipment as we work to get a handle on our cars as everyone is working hard to get things sorted out.”
Back on Sunday for the finale at the Stockton Dirt Track, a late draw for qualifying would prove to be unfavorable as the MonDak Portables Maxim registered the 23rd fastest lap in qualifying. On the outside of the 16-car heat race inversion, the Elk River, Minnesota native got his elbows up in heat competition charging from outside row three to secure a top-five transfer position in 4th.
Mired deep in the pack of the field for the start of the A-Main, Dollansky worked his way up a few positions during the mid-stage of the 30-lap feature. After the final restart on lap 16, the Rick Rogers Construction #7 battled for position with Jason Sides on a tough racing surface before taking the checkered flag in 18th position.
“Our results haven’t shown it but we are making progress as a team,” explained Dollansky. “Sunday we had a decent car but after a poor qualifying effort we had to start at the rear of the main event on a track that took rubber very early making it difficult to move forward. Right now I need to be patient as a driver until we get a better handle on our cars. We have a strong race team and need to stay focused and keep working hard and the results we all would like will follow.”
The Destiny Motorsports #7 team will now travel to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California this coming Saturday.
