Starks Runs Out of Fuel While Racing for Sprint Car World Championship Preliminary Night Win

Inside Line Promotions – MANSFIELD, Ohio (May 2, 2018) – Trey Starks had his first feature victory of the season in sight last weekend on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
The Gobrecht Motorsports driver kicked off the inaugural Sprint Car World Championship at Mansfield Motor Speedway on Friday by qualifying 25th quickest out of more than 70 competitors before he won a heat race to lock into an A Main, which he started on the inside of the fourth row.
“We had a great car and it kept getting better,” he said. “The track was fairly tricky so you had to be smart when you made moves, but we had a good enough car to drive up through there.”
Starks was up to second and within striking distance of the leader, who lost his brakes, when the engine began sputtering coming to the white flag. Starks ran out of fuel and he was credited with a 12th-place result.
“That was extremely disappointing,” he said. “We had a shot at winning the race and we would have at least ran second to earn a lock-in position to Saturday’s main event. That was also frustrating because it hurt us in event points.”
The event concluded on Saturday. Starks finished where he started – third – in a heat race before ending fourth in a B Main. That missed a transfer into the $100,000-to-win A Main by only two positions.
“It’s a tough pill to swallow when you were almost locked into one of the top eight starting positions from the night before and then come up short of making the main event,” he said. “There were a lot of great drivers there and you can’t have mishaps like what happened to us if you want a shot at racing for the top prize.”
Starks capped the night by advancing from sixth to fifth place in the non-qualifier race.
Gobrecht Motorsports has a busy weekend on tap with four races in three days. Starks will compete in both a 410 and 360 sprint car on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., before focusing on 360 action Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com. The weekend wraps up on Sunday at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pa.
