Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 4, 2019) – Trey Starks earned a top-10 result during his debut at Jackson Motorplex last Friday.

The Gobrecht Motorsports driver doubled his race count this weekend by competing in a trio of races during a two-day stretch, kicking off the action on Friday at the oval in Jackson, Minn.

“It was definitely good to get some racing in,” he said. “We had some ups and downs all weekend, but it was a good weekend for us just to get racing again.”

Starks opened Friday’s Midwest Power Series and Midwest Sprint Touring Series show by maneuvering from seventh to fourth place in a heat race. That ranked 10th in overall points out of 46 drivers and lined him up on the outside of the fifth row for the A Main.

“I didn’t draw the best number and had to start in the back of a heat race,” he said. “I like the track and the facility. I knew there’d be enough room to race. We picked up three spots to build decent points for the feature.

“We weren’t as good in the feature as we needed to be. The track got rougher as it went on and we weren’t quite prepared. Our car couldn’t handle the track as well as others did. We were set up for slicker conditions, but we survived and got our debut in at Jackson and rolled the car into the trailer.”

Starks captured a ninth-place finish, which marked his third top 10 of the season.

He continued the strong performance on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, where he set quick time during qualifying in the 410ci winged sprint car division for the first time in his career.

“Qualifying well makes the rest of the night a little easier,” he said. “The heat race inversion is tough because they’re all good cars. So if you don’t pass a lot of cars you still have good points to bank on.”

Starks placed sixth in a heat race and made the feature inversion. He lined up third and was battling for a top-five position early before a rare part failure resulted in a DNF.

“We broke a right rear birdcage bolt,” he said. “It was a weird thing. That doesn’t usually happen. It was one of those fluke deals. I think we were the best we’ve been at Knoxville this season so we are making progress.”

Starks also competed in the 360ci winged sprint car class that night. He timed in fifth quickest in his group and finished fifth in a heat race. That lined him up 16th in the main event.

“We had a decent qualifying lap for going out late,” he said. “We had okay points and knew we’d be starting midpack in the feature. We were solid and picked up a few spots. I think we had a decent car and something we could work with. The track had been pretty slick the couple of times we’ve run on it this year. The changes we make on the car, we know we can go even farther. We’ve been a little conservative. We’re trying to figure out how far we can push it. I think we know after Saturday we can keep pushing.”

Starks advanced to a 12th-place result.

He will return to action this Friday at Jackson Motorplex before racing on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
