Inside Line Promotions – JACKSON, Minn. (Sept. 25, 2019) – Justin Henderson and Mike Sandvig Racing overcame opening night misfortune to rebound for a fifth-place finish last Saturday night during the finale of the Casey’s General Stores Open Wheel Nationals presented by Sea Foam at Jackson Motorplex.

This was the second consecutive event the team competed in with the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series after a full season of racing at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. Henderson also had the benefit of seasoned crew chief and National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Guy Forbrook helping turn wrenches on the car.

“Guy has been a long-time friend of ours and he was kind enough to help us as the chassis was one of his old chassis and he really helped us find a nice baseline for things,” Henderson said. “To be able to focus on driving and knowing we had his experience and knowledge was a big deal and the car was really fast all weekend. He really got us dialed in.”

Henderson began Friday night’s opener by timing in 20th out of 29 cars with a lap of 13.999 seconds. As a result, the Tea, S.D., native started seventh in a heat race. He advanced three positions to finish fourth and qualify for the feature.

Henderson lined up 12th and ran as high as eighth before brake problems forced him to pull off the track with 10 laps to go. He was credited with a 21st-place finish.

“We didn’t qualify very good and we put ourselves in a tough position needing to come from 12th,” he said. “We broke the nose wing under a caution and then lost brakes completely so I got off the track before things got bad. But the car was great up to that point.”

Henderson showed incredible resolve as he unloaded fast during Saturday night’s finale by timing in third quickest among 26 competing cars with a lap of 12.901 seconds. In his heat race he started fourth and moved forward two positions to finish second, which locked him into the A Main.

Henderson, who started eighth, utilized the bottom of the track on an early restart to move into the top five. He advanced as high as second before a caution came out with eight laps to go. Once again battling brake problems, he attempted to pass for the lead on the restart, but was unable to make the pass and he lost three positions during the final circuits to hang on for a fifth-place finish.

The top five was the sixth of the season for Henderson in the Sandvig Racing machine.

“We had a few bad restarts early and we got moving forward there toward the late stages of the race,” he said. “But we lost brakes again and the car got really tight without them and we just held on for the best we could do. But I’m really happy with the speed we have found and the way the car is driving.”

Henderson and Sandvig planned to race this coming weekend, but with expected rain in the forecast the team instead will prepare for the remaining races on their schedule. They are planning to race around eight to 10 more times this season with exact tracks and dates to be determined later.
