Helms Endures Rough Finish Following Best-Ever World of Outlaws Qualifying Result

Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (June 3, 2015) – Caleb Helms had a great start to his night go awry last Friday at Attica Raceway Park.

Helms opened the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event by qualifying third quickest out of the 41 competitors at the third-mile oval, which marked his best career qualifying effort with the World of Outlaws.

“I had a good lap and the car was fast,” he said. “The wind was blowing so I tried to pay attention to that and keep the car down. I went into turn one and used enough throttle to keep myself on the track.”

That lined him up on the outside of the second row of a heat race. Helms needed to manage a top-five finish in his heat race to lock himself into the dash.

“I had a bad start and got bumped by some guys that wanted my spot worse than me I guess,” he said. “I made some bad decisions and it cost me early on. After Lap 4 my motor was bogging off the corners.”

Helms ended with a seventh-place result, which relegated him to the pole position of the Last Chance Showdown. Unfortunately, he was caught up in a crash just after completing the first lap while racing for the lead.

“You can call it tight racing,” he said. “I slid another driver coming into turn three and came off the high side of turn four. He came underneath me and had a nose on me. I was pulling him down the straightaway and just past the flagstand he tried to move up was what he said. It stuck his right rear into my left rear and I went spinning. It was pretty frustrating. We had a really good car.”

Helms was unable to finish the consolation race after nearly flipping.

It was the end to his weekend as UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions races on Saturday at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, and Sunday at Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio, were rained out.

Helms is slated to compete with the All Stars this Saturday at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pa., and Sunday at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa.

“I feel pretty good about it,” he said. “I feel like we’ve been knocking on the door all year and getting things figured out. Once we get things together from start to finish we’re going to have a really good night.”
