Lukon & Simmons at 2015 Pittsburgher, Thursday Night Thunder Recap!

27th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Pittsburgher 100, RUSH LM and Sportsman results, Kyle Lukon took the Precise Rush Late Model Approved Toilet Rentals 25, and Jake Simmons grabbed the Sunoco Sportsman Cruise America 20 at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway on August 29.

Burgettstown PA’s Kyle Lukon picked up his second win of the season in the Precise Rush Late Models Approved Toilet Rentals Outhouse 25, and his 33 career all time win, tops in the class. Lukon used an outside front row starting spot to grab the lead at the outset. Early on Lukon withstood a strong challenge from Andrew Satterlee. Satterlee put on the pressure until a lap 11 caution. On the restart Satterlee faded and Ryan Montgomery moved into the second spot. However, Montgomery really never challenged and Lukon pulled away to take the win. Montgomery held off a hard charging Mike Reft for second, followed by Ben Policz, Satterlee, Tommy Schirnhofer, Daryl Charlier, Colton Flinner, Toby Massie, and Steve Beatty. The heats were run under a unique highest percentage system and saw Kyle Lukon, Brandon Burgoon, (in the Bentz #60C), and Tommy Schirnhofer win the straight up heats, (by pill draw), while Ben Policz , Burgoon, and Ryan Montgomery won the inverted heats. Corey McPhearson missing on Friday to run in the Sportsman class at Lernerville showed up Saturday and got back in his regular ride the Bentz#60C and the team gave up the pole position that Brandon Burgoon earned them. Newcomers included Andrew Satterlee and Lindsay Barton from the central PA area.
In the Sunoco Sportsman Cruise America 20, McKees Rocks PA’s Jake Simmons won his second feature of the season and 56th PPMS all time win in the class, 2nd to Ron O’Patchen. Chris Schneider grabbed the lead at the outset and opened up a big lead over WV invader Bryan Mitchell. Mitchell battled for second with Simmons and 2015 point champ Bill Robertson. Simmons got by and set out after Schneider. But Schneider had built up a large lead and looked as if Simmons would run out of time to catch him. A lap 14 caution for Mitchell changed all that. On the restart Simmons took off with Schneider in close pursuit. Simmons built up his lead and pulled off one of the biggest wins in his career. Schneider was a disappointing second followed by Robertson, Bob Schwartzmiller, Todd Weldon, Dave McManus, Pat Hanley, Mitchell, Justin Lamb, and Davy Lee. The straight up heats went to Chris Schneider and Bryan Mitchell, while the inverted heats went to Bill Robertson and Schneider.

Thursday Night Thunder Pittsburgher warm-up at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway, August 27 2015, had Alex Ferree, Daryl Charlier, Dave McManus, Joe Podolinsky and Austin Ostrander win features. Up next: 27th Annual Lucas Oil Late Models Pittsburgher 100 August 28/29, 2015.

In the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, 2013, 2014 and now 2015 PPMS Track Champ picked up his third win of the season in an exciting race. Russ King grabbed the lead at the start on the event and led the first 18 laps. Ferree, started 6th and moved into second, but King maintained a good lead. Ferree was closing the gap, but it looked as if there wasn’t a caution, King would win his first ever PPMS feature. Then on lap 18, caution came out for a stopped Jared Miley. On the restart Ferree was able to grab the lead, but it wasn’t over yet. King stayed close and didn’t allow Ferree to get any kind of lead. On lap 22 the second caution came out for Brandon Burgoon and Colton Flinner. King retook the lead on the restart, but that was short lived, as Jared Miley stopped again and brought out another yellow. On the restart Ferree was back out front. But on the last lap, King moved ahead in one and two and led down the backstraight into three. Ferree was able to get a run on the high side off four and just got by King for the win at the checker. King had his best ever PPMS run to finish second; with Daniel Angelicchio have his best ever PPMS Super Late runs in third. Jared Miley rallied to fourth; Tim Shaffer in Bucky Johnson’s #47 was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Jon Hodgkiss, Bill Yohe Jr., Burgoon, Flinner and Steve Baker. Heats for the 15 cars on hand were won by Steve Baker and Mike Pegher. Last week’s winner Keith Barbara left early with oil pump problems.

The Precise Rush Crate Late Models, Midway PA’s Daryl Charlier picked up his third win of the season. Charlier started on the pole and led the entire distance, but withstood a mid race challenge from Jared Miley, (in the Schirnhofer #8), and later a charging Kyle Lukon to grab the win. Lukon was second followed by Miley, Colton Flinner, Steve Beatty, Justin Lamb, Paul Jablonski, Mark Moats Jr. and Scott Gunn. Josh Holtgraver and Steve Beatty won the heats. Josh Holtgraver won the 2015 PPMS championship, but was involved in a first lap crash and was done for the night. 17 cars were on hand.

Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman had a new winner, as Elizabeth PA’s Dave McManus won his first of the season. McManus started on the pole, but held off a strong challenge from WV invader Bryan Mitchell to pick up the victory. 2015 Champ Bill Robertson was third followed by Jake Simmons, Jeff Broniszewski, Justin Lamb, Bob Schwartzmiller, Nick Kocuba, Craig Koteles, and Shawn Neubert. Dave McManus and Jake Simmons took the heat wins.

In the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, Oakdale PA’s Joe Podolinsky took his 5th win in as many starts this season. Podolinsky won over Jacob Wiser, and 2015 Point Champ, Hannah Ramsey. With the 3rd place finish Ramsey grabbed her first ever track championship. Hannah now has the honor of being the first female racer to win a track championship in PPMS history.

Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns had a new winner, with Carnegie PA’s Austin Ostrander grabbing the win. He was followed by Mark Simmons, David Ostrander and 2015 point champ, O.B. Huff.
