Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Sept. 21, 2015) – Johnny Herrera overcame a slow start to the Casey’s General Store Midwest Fall Brawl IV last weekend at I-80 Speedway.

After rain forced the doubleheader to be combined into a one-night show on Saturday, Herrera got off on the wrong foot during his heat race on the high-banked track.

“It was horrible in the heat race,” he said. “We had no exit off the corners. I just wasn’t in the race track. It was the first time all year I’ve been like that. I was just no good at all. I made some rear bar changes and that’s really all I changed. We tightened up a little and we made a couple of changes and got better for the B Main.”

Herrera, who finished last in a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour heat race to open the night, charged from 13th to third place in the consolation race to garner a transfer into the back of the main event.

“It helped with the track getting slicker and wider,” he said. “When it starts to get freed up then you have to drive it and keep the tires under you. I could move around really good. It was pretty much on the fence, but there was some moisture on the bottom. You had to slow way down to hit it.”

Herrera continued to march forward in the first main event. He maneuvered from 19th to a sixth-place result, which earned him a $1,000 bonus for earning the Hard Charger Award. That also locked him into the second feature, which inverted the top 12 finishers from the first main event.

“Around Lap 6 or 7 the rubber started coming,” he said. “We were all looking for it. I was running the middle the first lap or two and found it wasn’t there so I had to jump up to the fence and then start working my way down. I was in conserve mode.”

Herrera picked up several positions early before the track completely took rubber and he held on to a third-place result, which marked his 24th top five of the season. He also advanced within 66 points of the lead in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings.

That was a big boost following a sour night the previous Saturday, when Herrera blew a right rear tire while running second with four laps remaining during the Portacool U.S. National Dirt Track Championship at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track in Fort Worth, Texas.

“We had a good car and we ran second the whole race,” he said. “We knew it’d take rubber. It was just a matter of when. We went into tire-saving mode, but we cut it or ran over something. We didn’t wear it out because we were driving hard.”

Herrera was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 14th-place result.

He is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 5th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
