Eve of Destruction Delivers in Sixteenth Season

Carnage was the name of the game at Meridian Speedway on Saturday, July 27, as the quarter-mile asphalt oval survived the sixteenth running of its annual Eve of Destruction. The Zamp NASCAR Latemodels, Pepsi Sprintcars, Idaho CDL Training Street Stocks, Idaho Asphalt Services Hornets, Firehouse Pub and Grill Bombers, and the Apex Idaho Drifters raced for the night’s Idaho CDL Training trophies before The Beast jet dragster, The Gauntlet, and the latest installment of the World Famous Boat Races of Destruction covered the track in wreckage.

Andrew Palmer’s win streak had to end eventually, and heavy traffic in the Idaho CDL Training Street Stock division proved to be his downfall. While Kendra Occhipinti got her Marv’s Tire Service, Sonic Crush machine out of the blocks and into the early lead, Palmer, Jesse James Lawson, and Scott Groom fought to make progress through the field. As the checkered flag waved Lawson crossed the Caleb’s Chop Shop Finish Line second in his Antlers Boutique machine, ahead of Groom, point leader Taylor Occhipinti, and finally Palmer in fifth place.

The Zamp NASCAR Latemodels took their green flag about thirty minutes later, and Palmer wasted no time working his Bobby’s Transmission mount to the top of the Pepsi-Cola scoreboard. Melissa Weaver battled her way to the runner up spot, but could only watch as Palmer pulled away from her Marv’s Tire Service, Sonic Crush machine and took the win. Dave Thomasson brought his car home third ahead of Neil Wassmuth, and Scott Murri.

Kate Jackson put her Pisca Trucking, Advanced Suspension sprinter out front and held off Pepsi Sprintcar point leader Casey Tillman to take home the Idaho CDL Training Feature Flag.

The Firehouse Pub and Grill Bombers took on a tractor tire obstacle course in their Eve of Destruction feature. Corbin Black mastered the disaster course and scored the victory.

The Idaho Asphalt Services Hornets debuted a new follow-the-leader game called Hare and the Hounds. Everett Meeks made his way to the point early and led the field up, down, across, backward, and every other direction around the Concrete Jungle on his way to the victory.

Richard Scott absorbed a number of body blows and dished out a few of his own during the RV Figure 8 race, including a closing corner spin of the aptly-named Titanic and sped to the win. But even after he took the checkered flag Scott’s six-wheeled machine was pounded in the intersection.

In other action Jeff Atamian’s The Beast jet dragster took less than three minutes to reduce a hapless Hornet to a shower of sparks and a pile of moten metal. The Hornets swarmed and stopped The Gauntlet after a hard-hitting seven laps to keep their winning streak alive. The Boat Race of Destruction was declared a draw between a newcomer in a Gold Suburban and Titus Clancy’s Gambler 500 Station Wagon.

The action continues this Friday and Saturday, August 9 and 10, with the YMC Mechanical Idaho 208 weekend. Friday, August 9, the Mill Pro-Late Models join forces with the Zamp NASCAR Latemodels for a 75-lap shootout on Walking Sombrero Taco Night. Saturday the Northwest Super Late Model Series takes their 208-lap turn on the quarter-mile. Log on to www.meridianspeedway.com for more information and to purchase your advance tickets. We’ll see you under the big, yellow water tower this Friday and Saturday, August 9 and 10, for YMC Mechanical Idaho 208 weekend at your NASCAR Home Track, Meridian Speedway.
