Lebanon, Oregon- Willamette Speedway would host one of its sentimental favorite events of the 2017 calendar. The Clair Cup, presented by Crocker’s Cars, is ran in memory of Clair Arnold who was the longtime owner and operator of the historic 1/3-mile clay oval. The card would feature the Super Late Model, IMCA Modified, Super Sports, Sportsman, and Street Stock divisions.
Darren Coffell, out of Bend, would score a huge victory by becoming the newest driver to best the field during the Clair Cup. It was also the central Oregon veteran’s first win of the campaign. Albany’s Casey Vitale returned to Willamette, after a hiatus, to finish runner-up followed by Joey Tanner, from Portland, in third. Bend’s Thomas Hunzikar got fourth while Bricen James, out of Albany, completed the top five, in fifth.
Keizer’s John Campos would best the field for the first time during the current campaign in the IMCA Modified ranks. Grey Ferrando, from Stayton, was second, with Brian Thompson, from Sweet Home, crossing the wire in third. The balance of the top five would consist of fourth finishing Collen Winebarger, out of Corbett, and Bricen James in fifth.
Brian Smith, of Albany, would hop in Dan Deibele’s entry in the Super Sport division. The former Super Sport champion would park it in victory lane once the checkered flag would drop. Salem’s Chris Mott got second with Lebanon pilot Jeff Rash, in third. B.J. Donofrio managed to get fourth followed by Randy Barley of Albany.
James Slover was victorious in the Sportsman ranks. The Lebanon driver would make it the first time he has won this year in the division and the second time a Slover has inhabited the winner’s circle. Corvallis chauffeur Ryan Emry was second with Lebanon veteran Glen Hackney behind him, in third. Jeff Rash was fourth and Lebanon’s Casey Rhoades placed fifth.
For the third occasion this season Brian Cronk would emerge victorious in the Street Stocks. Cronk, from Portland, has now amassed the most triumphs in the class. Justin Evans, of Lebanon, was second while Lafayette’s Brad Gentry managed to finish third. David Cronk, Brian’s father and also from Portland, placed fourth with Steve Jorgenson getting fifth.
