Lebanon, Oregon- Saturday, July 1st, would be the eighth and final round of the 2017 Wild West Modified Shootout. It would be the third straight night of competition at Willamette Speedway and featured forty-one cars from the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Montana and the Canadian province of British Columbia. The main event would feature thirty cars for forty laps and starting three-wide on the 1/3-mile clay oval.
Chowchilla, California’s Alex Stanford would grab the lead when the field would take the green flag and beat the competition to the wire on lap one. But by the time the second lap would be completed Cory Sample seized the position. The Winnemucca, Nevada driver would possess the coveted spot for a long time and had to be good on restarts as ten cautions occurred between laps two and thirty.
Sample would be challenged on several occasions but every time he managed to keep all contenders in check. But, on lap thirty-four Jesse Williamson would make the pass around the outside to move into the lead. The final caution of the night came out on lap thirty-five setting up for a late race restart.
Williamson, out of Eugene, would have no issues when the green flag would come out the final time. He would cross the front stretch first to win for the second time of the week and for the first time in his career that he has won with the series at Willamette. It also would be his tenth career Wild West Modified Shootout victory. More importantly it would be enough for him to win the 2017 Wild West Modified Shootout championship and is the fourth time he has done so.
Dustin Cady, from Albany and who at one time was in a position to challenge for the win, was second while Cory Sample ended the evening in third. Bakersfield, California’s Ethan Dotson would get fourth while finishing fifth would be Bricen James, out of Albany.
Winners in the first round of heat races were Cory Sample, Brian Pearce, Danny Lauer, and Bricen James. John Campos, Dustin Cady, Ethan Dotson, and Mark Wauge were winners in round two. Two consolation features were ran and picking up the victories were Brian Thompson and John Campos.
With the 2017 Wild West Modified Shootout in the books the planning for 2018 is already underway. Be sure and stay tuned on the series Facebook for the latest news and information. We would like to thank all of the teams, officials, and fans for all of their continued support.
