Greenbush Race Park

Imrie, Schill and Hess get RoC invites at GRP

On an afternoon that had Greenbush Race Park officials guessing if they would be running at all, Mother Nature was kind enough to let the racing go on. On tap for the night was the Race of Champions qualifier for the Modifieds, Streets, and Midwest Modifieds.

The Midwest Modifieds would be the first to qualify, as 14 cars would lineup for the green flag. Once again cautions would play a big part in slowing the pace of the race. Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, would be the early leader. After a restart on lap six Wahl would surrender the lead to Lance Schill of Langdon, ND, coming out of corner two. Schill was in control, and had to survive a green, white, checkered finish to pick up his third win of the year, Wahl finished second and won his heat, and Logan Salazar of Neche, ND started 14th and finished third. Jordan Wahl of Greenbush, MN, picked up the other heat win.

The Streets would be up next and send 15 cars to the green flag. Trey Hess of Lakota, ND would sit on the pole and was out front early. Two early cautions didn't slow Hess down at all. His only challenger came during the last five laps as Doug VanMill of Bagley, MN, came from the eighth spot to make it interesting. VanMill got a fender on Hess, but it was not enough to take the lead and Hess would go on to get his first ever GRP win. VanMill would finish second and Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, third and won his heat. James Meagher of Grand Forks, ND would pick up the other heat win.

Only 10 Modifieds in attendance for their RoC qualifier, and polesitter Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB, was out in front early. After two cautions on lap one, the guys reeled off 19 caution free laps. Delaine was in control for the first half of the race, and you had to wonder if he was experiencing some Deja vu, because on lap nine fellow Canadian and two-time national champ Ward Imrie of Winnipeg, MB, got beside Delaine going down the backstretch and made the pass for the lead coming out of corner four. Imrie would go unchallenged the rest of the way to score his third win of the year. Delaine would finish second and win his heat, and Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, would finish third. Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, would win the other heat.

The Pure Stocks would only send nine cars to take the green for their feature and Chris Bouwman of Garson, MB, would make the most of his front row starting spot. It wouldn't be easy for Bouwman as he had A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, and Bryon Berger of Badger, MN, hot on his bumper. The trio were never more than a car length apart and the only caution came when Berger slid off the backstretch with four to go. On the restart Bouwman was able to hold off Lane to get his first ever GRP win, Lane finished second and Berger would come back to finish third and win the only heat.

Eleven Lightning Sprints would take the green for their feature and pole sitter Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, left no doubt in everyone's mind, that he was the car to beat. The only question was who was going to finish second. After a caution on lap three Jason Berg of West Fargo, ND, would hold that position until the last caution came with two to go. On the restart Berg got passed by four cars and couldn’t recover. Truscinski cruised to his third win of the year and sweep of the evening. Presley Truedson of Kennedy, MN, finished second, and Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, third. Berg finished sixth in the feature and won his heat.

Kelly Steele still remains the guy to beat in the Outlaw Mini Mods, but Tyler Jonson of International Falls, MN, gave Steele a good run. The pair would race side by side for a couple of laps late in the race before Steele pulled away to get the sweep and forth win of the year. Jonson finished second and Justin Cutrer of International Falls, MN, third.

John Current of Bemidji, MN, is still undefeated in the 4 Cylinders as he picked up win number six with a sweep of the evening. Jarod Guillemette of Karlstad, MN, finished second and James Foley of Greenbush, MN, third.

Only two weekends of racing remain at the "Park", and up next will be the last visit of the year for the NLRA Late Models. Joining the Late Models that night will be the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Lightning Sprints. Pit Gates open at 4:30, Grandstands open at 5:30, draw cutoff is at 6pm with racing starting at 7pm sharp.
