Strand, Greseth, Veert, and Pederson collect GRP checkers

A warm breezy evening set the stage for a great night of racing at the Greenbush Race Park. Headlining the evening was the last visit of the year for the NLRA Late Models.

Fifteen Late Models were on hand for the nights racing, and all 15 made the call for their 25 lap feature, which ran caution free in just over six minutes. Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, MN, and Bill Mooney of Selkirk, MB, would share the front row, and it would be Strand out in front from the get go. Shane Edginton of Winnipeg, MB, would start third, and be Strand's biggest threat. Strand had about a half a straightaway lead over Edginton when they ran into heavy lapped traffic about the midway point of the race. Edginton would close the gap a little but it wasn't enough to challenge Strand. Strand would go on to get the win and sweep of the evening while Edginton finished second and Joey Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, third. Mooney would pick up the other heat win.

Only 10 Modifieds were on hand, and Lance Schill of Langdon, ND and Michael Greseth of Harwood, ND would share the front row to start the feature. Greseth would get out in front early and Schill never got more than a car length behind. Early cautions slowed the race and a caution by Schill on lap six forced him to retire from the race. Greseth lost the lead on lap 12 to Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB, in corner four, two laps later Greseth got it back in the same corner. The last caution came on lap with three to go and on the restart Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, would get by Delaine for the second spot, but didn't have enough to catch Greseth as he went on to get his first GRP win of the summer. Teunis would finish second and Delaine third. Heat wins went to Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN.

Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, sat on the outside pole for the 11 car Midwest Modified feature and be in command for most of the race. On lap 10 Paul Veert of Winnipeg, MB, would get by Olson coming out of corner four. Caution flags with two to go set up a green, white, checkered finish and Veert would take his second win of the year, with Olson finishing second and Steven Hougard of Strandquist, MN, third. Heat wins went to Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, and Lance Schill of Langdon, ND.

The 12 car Street feature ran caution free and John Halvorson of Warren, MN, was out in front early. Fifteen year old Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, started fifth, and was quietly working his way to the front. Pederson took over the second spot about midway through the race and using the high side of the track started reeling in Halvorson. Pederson made the pass for the lead going down the back stretch with two to go, and went on to get his second checkered flag of the year. Halvorson finished second and Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, would finish third and win his heat. The other heat win went to Doug VanMill of Bagley, MN.

Only eight cars were on hand for the Lightning Sprint feature, and outside pole sitter Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, jumped to the early lead. Dvergsten, using a borrowed car for the evening, held the lead until he brought out the caution for sliding off the top of corner four. From there the race went caution free and Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, went on to get win number four for the year. Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, finished second and Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, third. Dvergsten came back to finish fourth and win the lone heat.

Chris Bouwman would make it back to back wins as he picked up the checkered flag in the nine car Pure Stock feature. A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, made sure Bouwman earned the win with some good early pressure, but a slight bobble about midway through the race let Bouwman pull away for the win. Lane would finish second and Chris Thomas of St. Malo, MB would finish third and win the lone heat.

Up next, the Greenbush Race Park will wrap its 2019 racing season with our annual Labor Day weekend doubleheader, racing Saturday and Sunday. Racing both nights will include our Wissota classed of Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, and Pure Stocks, along with the Lightning Sprints, 4 Cylinders, Outlaw Mini Mods, and the Northern Renegade non-wing Sprint cars. Car counts of 100 or more are expected. Pit gates open at 4:30, grandstands at 5:30. Cutoff for the draw is at 6pm and racing starts at 7pm sharp. Everything is ONE HOUR EARLIER for Sunday as racing will start at 6pm sharp. Sunday night will also be fan appreciation night.
