Greenbush Race Park
Imrie gets third Baker cup and two first time winners at GRP
A beautiful day until it was time to race. At about 6:45pm a quick shower passed over the Greenbush Race Park just as cars were packing the track in. Everyone was sent to the pits, and luckily the rain didn't last long. About 20-30 minutes after the rain stopped the track crew got to work, and about another 20 minutes after that the cars were back on the track getting the surface packed in and at 8:15 the green flag dropped, but unfortunately the color of the night was yellow, as three of the five features were filled with cautions.
It was the 21st running of the Elliot Baker memorial for the Modifieds and 14 would take the green flag for their 24 lap feature. The cautions were early and often but it would be Stony Mountain, MB, driver Rick Delaine leading the way. Hot on his heels was two time defending Wissota Modified champion Ward Imrie of Winnipeg, MB. A restart on lap 11 had Delaine with the lead going into one and two, but when they came out of four it was Imrie with the lead. Justin Bronk of West St. Paul, MB, brought out the last caution with four to go when he rolled his car about four times down the front stretch. Bronk was able to walk away from the incident, but the same couldn't be said for his car. Imrie went on to get his third Baker cup win and second win on the year. Delaine would finish second and win his heat, and Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, third. The other heat win went to Rene Poluyko of Tyndall, MB.
This night was also our rescheduled Pure Stock special and 15 cars would take the green flag for their 20 lap feature and outside pole sitter Daryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, was out to the early lead. But on lap four Heintz slowed in three and three cars got by him giving to lead to Bryon Berger of Badger, MN. Berger was able to hang on to the lead even through three late cautions for win number three on the year. Cody Armstrong of Devils Lake, ND would finish second and A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, third. Gary Feeleus of La Salle, MB, and Jeremy Anderson of Newfolden, MN, picked up the heat wins.
The Midwest Modifieds would send 14 cars for the green flag and it would be Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, in command early. The pace of this race was slowed considerably with a total of eight cautions. In the end Blacklance would pick his first GRP win of the year. Nate Reynolds of Hoople, ND would finish second and Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, third. Both Reynolds and Sobolik would win their respective heats.
Fifteen Wissota Streets would line up for their feature with the front row pair of Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, and Jake Froemke of International Falls, MN, leading the way. This pair of 15 year old drivers had themselves a great race, with Pederson out in front and Froemke never more than two car lengths behind. Only two cautions in this race, and it was just a couple of weeks ago, Pederson was in this same position, he was leading and over drive going into corner four and it sent him to the infield. This time there was no doubt, as he went on to pick up his first ever GRP feature win. Froemke finished second but was DQ'd for not going to tech giving Doug Van Mill of Bagley, MN, second and Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, third. Heat wins went to John Halvorson of Warren, MN, and Jerome Berger of Badger, MN.
The only feature to run caution free was the 10 car Lightning Sprint feature. When the green flag dropped it looked like third position starter Lawrence Veralrud of Oslo, MN, was shot out of a cannon. It was Veralrud’s race to lose as no one could get close enough to challenge for the lead, and he would go on to get his first ever GRP feature win, and sweep of the evening. Keep in mind that Veralrud is 79 years young. Brody Hutton of Manvel, ND, would finish second and Murray Temple of Hartney, MB, third. Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, would pick up the other heat win.
Up next at the Park will be our Wissota Race of Champions qualifiers for the Modifieds, Streets, and Midwest Modifieds. Also racing that night will be the Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints, 4 Cylinders, and Outlaw Mini Mods. Pit gates open at 4:30, grandstand opens at 5:30. Cutoff for the draw is at 6pm with racing starting at 7pm sharp.
