Greenbush Race Park
Seven drivers pick up opening night wins at GRP
A cool and breezy night greeted racers and fans as the Greenbush Race Park kicked off the 2019 race season for the WISSOTA Dirt Track Series.
Ten of eleven Modifieds took the green flag for their 20 lap feature and it was West St. Paul, MB, driver Shawn Teunis who was in command early. Starting outside row one, Teunis built about a half straightaway lead over the rest of the pack and never looked back, as the race ran caution free and Teunis would go on to pick up his first ever Modified win at the Race Park. Justin Bronk of West St. Paul, MB, would come home second and win his heat with a good battle for the third and fourth spot between Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, and Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB. Wahl would win that battle for the podium finish. Delaine picked up the other heat win.
A light field of eight Midwest Modifieds took the green for their 15 lap feature and Austin Hunter of Winnipeg, MB, grabbed the early lead. But two laps in it would be Paul Veert of Winnipeg, MB, who would make the pass for the lead coming out of corner two. Hunter appeared to retake the lead eight laps later, but a caution wiped that out. Veert and Hunter never got more than a car length apart as Hunter tried to get under Veert on numerous occasions. Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, would join the battle to make it a three car race, but when the checkers flew it was Veert holding everyone off for the win. Hunter would finish second and win the lone heat, and Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, had a late race surge to finish third.
The Streets would line up 11 cars for their feature and pole sitter Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, shot out to the early lead. Behind Gust, it was a good five car battle for position until lap nine when Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, and Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, touched in corner four and both ended up in the front wall bringing out the only caution of the race. Both drivers were able to continue. Gust would continue his lead on the restart, but with two to go Johnson would pass Gust coming out of corner two for the lead and go on to get the win. Gust would hold on for second and Eric Riley of Morris, MN, would finish third. Heat wins went to Nick Linert of Badger, MN, and Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN.
The Pure Stocks would send nine cars out to take the green flag, and Chris Bouwman of Garson, MB, would be the early leader. But Bouwman would only be able to lead for two laps when Darryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB, would make the pass in corner three. Heintz would go on to get the win Jon Duray of Karlstad, MN, would finish second and win the lone heat, Chad Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, would finish third.
Only seven Lightning Sprints were on the track for their feature and outside pole sitter Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, took the lead. But going into corner four on lap two Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, had the hammer down and passed Truscinski on the outside to take the lead. Truscinski using the low side would take a couple of more stabs at the lead but each time Dvergsten running the high side was able to hold him off and go on to get the win and the sweep of the evening. Truscinski would finish second and Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would finish third.
In the Outlaw Mini Mod feature Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, would pass Justin Johnson of Baudette, MN, for the lead in corner four just three laps in. Steele continues to be the guy to beat in the Mini Mods as he went on to get the win and the sweep. Tyler Jonson of International Falls, MN, would finish second and Blake Ferris of Emo, ON, third. Justin Cutrer of International Falls, MN, would pick up the other heat win.
Only three 4 Cylinders were signed in and the feature and heat finished the same way. John Current of Wilton, MN, in first, Joel Olson of Karlstad, MN, second and Jarod Guillemette of Karlstad, MN, third.
Up next at the Race Park will be just another night of regular racing with the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints, 4 Cylinders, and Outlaw Mini Mods. Pit Gates open at 4:30, Grandstand gates open at 5:30, cut off for the draw is at 6pm with the green flag dropping at 7pm sharp.
