Taylor Ferns Set for First Trip of 2015 to Fremont Speedway in Ohio

Fremont Speedway and Attica Raceway Park have quite a bit in common. They each are third-mile bullrings. Both are situated in Northern Ohio, just 30 miles apart. Each runs 410 winged sprint cars. They both have a great working relationship together and usually are mentioned in the same sentence. And, most importantly, both provide some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing action anywhere in the country. Taylor Ferns raced at Attica last week and will make her first start of 2015 at Fremont this weekend.

The 65th season of racing at Fremont Speedway opens on Saturday, April 11 with Tank’s Meats of Elmore Night. The weekly 410 sprint cars will part of a four division racing program at the track located at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds.

Ferns made five appearances at Fremont Speedway last season in the Eco-Mend/Jimmy’s Towing Maxim. She finished eighth on September 27 at the third-mile bullring, charging her way forward from the 16th starting position. Ferns also raced in the Jim Ford Classic with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions last fall at Fremont, qualifying for the main event on the first night and finishing 18th, after getting caught up in a first lap accident. In addition, the 2011 USAC D1 Midget Series champion competed with the F.A.S.T. series twice at Fremont in 2014.

“Fremont (Speedway) was a place I struggled at last year the first few times we went there,” said Ferns. “By the end of the season, having turned a lot of laps there, we improved each time and I got more comfortable there. Fremont is one of the toughest tracks you’ll race at, along with Attica (Raceway Park). The more laps you have there, the better your finishes usually are.”

Ferns raced with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions last weekend at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio. She timed in 24th-quickest of the 41 cars that were on hand at the high-banked third-mile. Ferns finished sixth in a very strong second heat race, which put her in the B-main. She would wrap up the night by crossing the line ninth in the B-main. The Michigan native, who now calls the Indianapolis area home, also competed in three events with the All Stars in Florida in February, earning an eighth-place finish in the season opener at Bubba Raceway Park, along with a pair of 11th-place showings.

“Racing with the All Stars certainly makes you better and more prepared when you go to a weekly show like we are this week,” she shared. “With it being opening night there will probably be a lot of cars and many of the same drivers we raced against last week. Attica and Fremont are similar in how technical they are. If you can pick up things at Attica and transfer that over to Fremont, technicality-wise, that helps out a lot.”

Ferns is set to run in a variety of winged sprint events across the Midwest this season, with several different series, including a large portion of the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions schedule. Most of the races she’ll compete in this will have time trials as part of the program.

“We are working hard on improving our qualifying,” said Ferns. “Time trials play a big part of your night just about with every series, so if you qualify well, you give yourself a better chance the rest of the night. We are looking to turn in consistent runs and build some momentum as we get racing more with the season picking up.”
