Two P's in a pod! Pepitone and Persails among Destruction winners!
The Monster X Metals and Gold Eve of Destruction at Birch Run Speedway got an added date on September 20th and the show did not disappoint the fans. Spinouts, missing bumpers and wheels, and a huge wreck in the Figure 8 enduro kept fans on the edge of their seats all night.
The Pull and Push Races were the first two events of the evening. Justin Pepitone and Gerry Persails Jr were victors in both events as the Team 80 Motorsports/ The Shop drivers have become a fixture in victory lane. Finishing behind the duo in the Pull race were Shane Fogarty and Josh VanWormer with Anthony Richardson and Ron Lowell settling for second and third in the Push race.
The Back to School Race, one of the more popular destruction events, had 30 drivers start. The field got stacked up behind the bus multiple times when the lights were flashing and multiple drivers took a turn to be the leader. The last driver to dodge the bus and the rest of the entrants when the checkers flew was Gerry Persails Jr. Persails took the win ahead of Anthony Richardson, Cody Luark, Ron Lowell, and Shane Fogarty.
The Top Speed Motorsports Spectator Drags had their highest entrant count of the season with nine drivers signing up to bring their street cars out to tackle the third-mile. Glenn Kern and Anthony Richardson made it to the best two out of three final round. After Kern won the first race, Richardson picked up the win in race two. Richardson won race three, but since there was extra money on the line both drivers decided to do a winner-take-all fourth race on the four-tenths mile. Kern won the race but the drivers split the winnings.
The Flagpole races were split into Front Wheel Drive and Rear Wheel Drive. After picking up three wins at Corrigan Oil Speedway on September 6th, Cody Luark picked up the win in the Front Wheel Drive Flagpole race. The Dover Doors and Windows driver finished ahead of Ron Lowell, Alex Smith, William Grubbs Jr, and Jeremy Snyder. In the Rear Wheel Drive Flagpole race, Anthony Richardson returned to victory lane in his Louies Towing #422. He led Jason Grissom, Gerry Persails Jr, Justin Pepitone, and Andrew Burton to the checkers.
21 drivers took to the track for the Figure 8 enduro. Andrew Burton started on the point and survived multiple close calls at the intersection in placing first in his Finish Line Seamless Gutters/Top Speed Motorsports 05. During the event, there were some minor hits in the intersection and one serious one. Hudson Corl and Maverick Morrow made heavy contact, shearing the two right-side tires off of Morrow’s machine and sending one hurtling toward the front stretch wall. Fortunately, the tire stayed on the track surface and both drivers were checked out by the safety crew and were sore, but ok.
The Mid Michigan Mayhem School Bus Figure 8 closed out the night’s action. Fluid on the track and a stray door in turn one did not slow Gerry Persails Jr. Persails braved the intersection and picked up his fourth checkered flag on the night!
The Monster X Metals and Gold Eve of Destruction will close out the 2024 season at Birch Run Speedway on Saturday, October 5th! The special season ender will be a special Halloween-themed event with Halloween music playing all event long. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite PG-13 costume and drivers are encouraged to decorate their vehicles accordingly! The Push and Pull Races will be in action as will the returning Double O race. New for the last race will be the Hot Pursuit and Bootlegger Races. The Top Speed Motorsports Spectator Drags will compete and the night will close with a pop-up-camper race!
