DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY OPENS 2016 SEASON SATURDAY NIGHT
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – It is hard to believe that the 2016 racing season at the Delaware International Speedway is upon us. For nearly five decades the Cathell Family has presented weekly Saturday night dirt track racing on their tacky clay half-mile. This Saturday night, April 16th will kick off the 2016 schedule and will once again feature the five weekly divisions which include: the NAPA Big Block Modifieds; the S.R. Pete & Sons Super Late Models; the AC Delco PSC 602 Sportsman; the Crate Models and the Mod Lites. Weekly racing will be supported by a host of rotating club based classes including: the Super Trucks; Delmarva Chargers; Little Lincoln Vintage Cars; Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars and the new Street Stocks.
All divisions will take part in a "Tune & Test" on Monday April 11th. The "Tune & Test" is free to everyone on the spectator side with gates opening at 5 p.m. and testing will run by class from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Opening night will be “Town of Delmar Night� in tribute to the town that has played host to the racing facility since 1963. Any fan with a picture I.D. with a Delmar, Del. or a Delmar, Md. address will be admitted to the spectator side for free. All children 13 and under are admitted free to the spectator side when accompanied by an adult. The night will feature the NAPA Big Block Modifieds, S.R. Pete & Sons Super Late Models, Crate Models, AC Delco PSC Modifieds, Mod Lites and the Super Trucks.
Three big mid-week shows are back on the schedule this season. Thursday night, May 26th will be the “Diamond State 50� Short Track Super Series Southern Region event for Big Block Modifies. June 21st the Delaware State Police will host the 44th Annual Camp Barnes Benefit and Thursday night, August 11th Fulton Bank will once again host the World of Outlaw Late Models.
The United Racing Club Sprint Cars will appear on two occasions this season sponsored by S.R, Pete & Sons on May 7th and by R.C. Holloway Co.  August 27th. Other “Delaware Money Trail� nights include: Elliott Farms Night May 14th; Midlantic Machinery, Inc. Night on July 23rd; and L&J Sheet Metal Night on September 3rd.
Memorial events this season include: Â the William J. & Juanita Cathell Memorial Night on April 23rd; Kyle Dixon Memorial on June 4th; Tony Steele Memorial Vintage Car Race on July 9th and the Norris Bryan Memorial on August 6th.
Saturday night September 10th will be “Fund Raiser Night� open to all non-profit organizations. To participate contact the speedway office prior to the event. K&B Auto of Delmar will be sponsoring the Pace Truck for 2016. Entries to win the truck will be sold throughout the season will all proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The lucky winner will be picked from the entries at the end of season Delaware State Championship weekend on Oct. 21st and 22nd.
