Yesterday, December 14, 2016, Det. Jeff Hudson of the Delaware State Police confirmed, the 45th Annual Camp Barnes Benefit Race will return Tuesday night June 20, 2017. We are excited to return to DIS for our 45th year, stated Hudson. This race is our largest fund raiser for the camp each year.

The Cathell family, began the relationship back in 1972. The late founder of DIS, William J. Cathell was approached by the late, Melvin Joseph Sr. Joseph asked Cathell if he would willing to host a race with the proceed to benefit Camp Barnes located in Ocean View, Deleware. Cathell agreed and the partnership has remained after all these years.

In 1947, the Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police, an organization which was composed of active law enforcement and correctional officers, accepted the challenge to undertake a project to combat juvenile delinquency in the first state. A committee was appointed to investigate the problems confronting youth. Its resulting recommendation led to the establishment of Camp Barnes for the recreation of deserving youth from throughout the state.

Camp Barnes is located on Millers Creek, a tributary of Little Assawoman Bay. Since 1947 thousands of children from all over Delaware have had the opportunity to attend summer camp at Camp Barnes. Today, Camp Barnes is open to all children who are residents of the state of Delaware and are between the ages of 10 and 13. Camp Barnes is not a camp for children with behavioral problems and juvenile delinquents. Children attend the camp at NO COST to the camper or their family. The camp is in session from early June until August and accommodates approximately 60 campers per week for six weeks.

Since 1972, this race has made the dreams come true for children in the first state. Charles Cathell, CEO of the Delaware International SpeedwayThe Cathell stated, our family has been honored to be affiliated with the State Police and Camp Barnes all these years. We have always felt the need to support our communities as they have supported us for many years, Cathell states. We hope everyone will come out once again in 201, to support this great cause.

In the coming weeks, we will be posting more details and information on this years event.
