SATURDAY NIGHT FALLS TO EXCESSIVE HEAT – CAMP BARNES NEXT ON SCHEDULE TUESDAY NIGHT AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE = An extreme heat warning backed up by a noon time heat index of 103 degrees forced the cancellation of Saturday night’s racing at the Delaware International Speedway. Phone calls from race teams starting on Friday morning and the overall concern for the drivers, crews, fans and track personnel prompted the decision. It is only the second time in the history of the track that racing has been cancelled due to extreme heat.
The next event on the schedule is the 40th Annual Camp Barnes Benefit on Tuesday night, July 10th. The forecast is for cooler temperatures in the coming week which should provide more favorable conditions. In the event of rain, action will move to the following night, July 11th. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m. General admission is $17 with pits $27 and children 10 and under admitted free on the spectator side with a paying adult. All proceeds go to benefit Camp Barnes.
The Delaware State Police have added a family fun zone located in the grassy field behind the main grandstand. There will be exhibits, demonstrations, games, monster bus rides, a silent auction of racing memorabilia and more.
With the hefty purse that is posted for the event, expectations are high that a number of top traveling teams will be in attendance. Both the Big Block Modifieds and the Super Late Models will be running 25-lap feature events paying $3000 to win each and $200 to take the green. There will also be a $40 per lap leader’s bonus in each division adding a possible additional $1000 to the winner’s share plus the top five finishers in each will square off in a 12-lap Modifieds vs. Late Models shootout that will pay an additional $1000 to win.
Also in action will be the Crate Models, AC Delco Modifieds, and Mod Lites going 15-laps each with $25 lap leader bonuses and the Little Lincoln Vintage cars and the Delmarva Chargers going 10 laps each. For more information on the event contact Det. Jeff Hudson at 302-381-3000.
