Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 9, 2018) – Kerry Madsen let out a huge exhale last Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway, where he guided Big Game Motorsports to its first feature victory of the season.
“It was a bit of a relief,” he said. “At times the more you want to win the further it’ll be away. I feel like the more you go and do the things you need to do and get the feel you need to feel and have the patience it’ll all click at some point.”
It all clicked on Saturday during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Madsen qualified fifth quickest overall before he won a heat race to advance into the dash. A sixth-place run in the dash started the Muddy backed team on the outside of the third row for the 41-lap A Main.
“If you start in the top 10 and you’re good enough you’ll win,” he said. “And if you’re not good enough it doesn’t matter if you’re starting a half a lap ahead. When you’re racing with the World of Outlaws you want to go forward and get a good finish. You’re not going to drive by everybody in a couple of laps. You want good starts and good momentum.”
Madsen took advantage of both as he worked into the runner-up position before he gave chase to leader Brad Sweet throughout the second half of the main event.
“We were making ground on the leaders at all times,” Madsen said. “As the race went on the car got stronger and stronger. I got into second and I was looking ahead like I might have to start coming up with a plan. With five or six laps to go the traffic was blocking the fast line. Sweet moved and I reacted to it and tried to be aggressive. I got a run in turn one and he slid me back.”
A couple of laps later Madsen took the lead for good and he led the final three circuits to score his 25th career World of Outlaws win.
“It’s been a work in progress,” he said. “It wasn’t a case of Guy (Forbrook) throwing some magic thing at it and it clicked. We’ve been trying to get back to what we had last year. We keep working and working. It clicked in the A Main.”
The weekend didn’t get off to as smooth of a start on Friday as Madsen qualified seventh quickest, placed seventh in a heat race, won the Last Chance Showdown and ended 18th in the main event.
“We got out of position and got swamped in the heat race,” he said. “We weren’t very good either so that was a double whammy. We weren’t bad in the Last Chance Showdown, but we tried to get really aggressive with the car in the A Main. It was a traffic jam back there and we weren’t good enough to fly up through there. It was disappointing. When you bury yourself early it’s hard to get out.”
Big Game Motorsports will join the World of Outlaws this Thursday through Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, for the 35th annual Kings Royal. Madsen won the marquee event in 2014.
