Can Billy Dunn Be Stopped At Can-Am?

LAFARGEVILLE, NY - It was a full schedule of racing for the Independence Weekend at Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, NY on Saturday night. Cloudy and breezy conditions with mild temperatures had the sweatshirts on the fans in the stands, while the track was afire with racing action. Once again Billy Dunn was master of the 358 Small Block Modifieds, while David Rogers reigned over the Sportsman Mods. Other feature winners included Shawn Kirby in the Pro Street Stocks, Mike Gadbaw in the Novice Sportsman, Lyle Robinson in Thunder Cars, and Harley Brown in Mod Lites. Eastern Ontario Vintage Club also ran a duel Vintage Modified feature. It was a night that saw several roll-overs and multiple caution flags. In the end, the fans were provided with yet another amazing night of racing at Can-Am!

HEAT RACES
First onto the track for the evening were the Vintage Modifieds. Starting at the head of the pack for the first of three heat races was B3 Steve Billings and B22 Steve Lackie in first and second place respectively. 66 Jim Kirkwood shot out of the second place to grab onto the lead at the drop of the green flag. X22 Denzil Billings moved into second after just three laps. X22 Billings went high through the final turns, making a move for first, but 66 Kirkwood powered away to the checkered flag. At the finish line it was 66 Kirkwood, x22 Denzil Billings, and B3 Steve Billings as the top three finishers.
Heat number two for the Vintage Modified class rolled out next, with 70 Steve Arbuthnot and B10 Paul Billings in first and second place to start. 70 Arbuthnot faded quickly while x3 Les Myers leaped out to the lead in his Gremlin. 2 John Stanley moved up into second position by lap two, challenging for the lead. Meanwhile 85NY Chris Ketch was also on the move, sliding into the third position by the final lap. At the checkered flag it was x3 Les Myers, 2 John Stanley and 85NY Chris Ketch in the top three positions.
The third heat race had 4 Tim Hegarty and 00 Darryl Wilson in first and second positions to start. It was tire-to-tire and door-to-door around the first lap. 4 Hegarty moved into sole possession of first place by lap two, while 12 Charland slid into second place. 12 Charland made his move on the final lap, attempting a pass through turns three and four. It was a photo finish, with 12 taking the race by the thickness of a front bumper. At the checkered flag it was 12 Tim Charland, 4 Tim Hegarty and 00 Daryl Wilson in the top three positions.

Next up were Pro Street Stocks, with 62 and 1x in the top two positions to start the race. 1x White leaped out to the lead immediately, while Murphy faded quickly. 83 Milt Combs and 4 Mike Durham parried for second position, and opened the door for 3 Rick Dusckas to slip past and challenge for the lead. By lap four, Dusckas and White were in full battle for first place. White was running high around the track, while Dusckas was happy in the low line. On the final lap, Dusckas pulled into the lead, and brought home the win. Top three finishers were 3 Rick Dusckas, 1x Mike White, and 83 Milt Combs.
The next heat race for Pro Street Stocks had 19 Robert Scott and 32 Ryan Shanahan in the top two positions to start. At the drop of the green it was a traffic jam with four cars vying for the lead, 3k Shawn Kirby managed to angle into the lead, while 272 Tiger Chapman maneuvered into second, with Scott and Shanahan in third and fourth. With one lap remaining, 32 Shanahan moved into third, while Chapman didn’t have quite enough to wrest away the lead from Kirby by the time the checkered flag was unfurled. The top three finishers were 3k Shawn Kirby, 272 Tiger Chapman, and 32 Ryan Shanahan.

The Sportsman Modifieds roared into action next, with 97 Mike Mandigo and 71 Delbert LeGrow in the top two starting positions. LeGrow struck early, dashing into the lead through turn one. 21 Taylor Caprara moved up from sixth position to second by lap two, while 621 Brian Hudson settled into third. By lap three, Taylor passed LeGrow, as had Hudson and 44 Dave Rogers, giving us a brand new top three racecars. Rogers and Hudson sparred for second, with Rogers taking over second place by lap four. Rogers would dive low through the turns, while Caprara rode high. Rogers made his move on the final lap, but Caprara kept a half a car lead across the finish line. At the checkered flag it was 21 Taylor Caprara, 44 David Rogers, and 621 Brian Hudson in the top three positions.
For the second heat it was 415 Andrew Wren and 38 Zach Sobotka in first and second positions. Wren led through the first lap, with Sobotka trailing comfortably in control of second. 57 Anthony Stockman shot ahead from fifth starting position to challenge Sobotka for second, taking hold of the position by lap two. Stockman set his sights on the lead by lap four, supplanting Wren as the leader by lap five. Meanwhile, 271 Tiger Chapman Jr. was battling for third place with Sobotka. With one lap remaining, Chapman rode the track high, with Sobotka running low. But it was 38 Sobotka at the line in third, with 415 Wren in second and 57 Stockman in first.

The Mod Lites were on the track next, with 5x Chris Binoffski and 8 Harley Brown in second. Brown shot out to a commanding lead, with Binoffski in second. 73 Rich Rainville moved up from fifth to third by lap three, challenging Binoffski for second. At the checkered flag it was Brown, Binoffski and Rainville as the top three finishers. The second heat race for Mod Lites had 03 Matt Rainville and 1w Brad Reif in the top two starting positions. 03 Matt Rainville wasted no time in moving into sole possession of first place through turn one of the first lap. By lap three 1w Reif was making a move, grabbing onto the lead. There was a close call in lap five, as Rainville spun going down the back stretch, narrowly avoiding a serious mishap. At the checkered flag it was 1w Reif, 5 Jason Premo and 03 Matt Rainville.

The 358 Small Block Modifieds thundered onto the half-mile clay surface next, with 1 Craig Collier and 39 Tyler Bartlett in the top two positions. By lap two, 51x Brady Gill was on the move, sliding past Bartlett and Collier to collect the lead position. 9 Billy Dunn started in sixth position, but was already into second place by lap three. Dunn was running the track in the high line, while Gill stayed low. Gill hugged the lower apron trying and succeeding in keeping Dunn behind him all the way to the finish line. At the checkered flag it was 51 Gill, 9 Dunn, and 1 Collier in the top three positions.
The second heat for the 358s had 12 Keith Weston and 10 Josh VanBrocklin in first and second positions. The green flag dropped and VanBrocklin shot into the lead. 16 Lance Willix II challenged immediately for second place, but got a little loose in turn one of lap two, opening the door for 57 Rylee Gill, who zipped by. By lap five, Gill was hot on the heels of Weston, passing him one lap later. At the checkered flag it was 10 VanBrocklin, 57 Rylee Gill and 12 Keith Weston in the top three positions.

Novice Sportsman class was next on the track with two heat races. 00 Billy Matteson and 18 Justin Gadbaw started the race in first and second positions. Matteson retained the lead through the first lap, while 30 Hunter Schwander was hard-charging from sixth position to second by lap two. 24 Jordan Kelly was moving as well, sliding from third to first by lap three. Schwander and Kelly battled for the top position for a lap until Schwander went up over the berm on the back stretch, relinquishing second position to 4x Mike Gadbaw. It took another lap for Schwander to regain the second position, but could not get past Kelly by the checkered flag. At the finish line it was 24 Kelly, 30 Schwander and 4x Mike Gadbaw in the top three positions.
The second Novice Sportsman heat race had 76G Skylar Greenfield and 15 Greg Henry in the top two positions to start the race. 1 Cole Davidson blasted into the lead through turns one and two, after starting in third. 54G Greg Snyder was also on the move, advancing from fourth to first by lap two. 34 Eric Nier moved into third position on the same lap, improving from a fifth place starting position. 66 Corbin Millar improved from sixth to fourth, but didn’t quite have enough to get a top three finish. At the checkered flag it was 54G Greg Snyder, 1 Cole Davidson and 34 Eric Nier in the top three positions.

It was a packed class for the Thunder Cars, with twenty-two cars in three heats. For the first heat it was 17 Mike Greenfield and 11J Justin Burns in the top two starting positions. 42 Lyle Robinson moved up from fourth to first by lap 2. 40H Jerry Herbert weaved his way from seventh position to second by lap three. 42 Robinson recaptured the lead by lap three, and rode that lead all the way to the checkered flag, with 40H Herbert in second and 32 Chuck Monica in third.
Heat number two had 111J A.J. St. Mary and 61 Gerald Rogers in first and second positions. It was four wide at the drop of the green, with 2s Gary Sharlow and 17N Justin Nier bookending the leaders. 17N Nier came out on top, with sole possession of the lead at the conclusion of lap one. 2s Sharlow was firmly in second place, while 61 Rogers settled into third. 40 Jesse Bender was charging hard from the seventh place starting position. He pushed up to third by the final lap. At the checkered flag it was 17N Nier, 2s Sharlow and 40 Bender in the top three positions.
The final heat race for the Thunder Cars had 83 Carl Burdick and 17x Pat Sullivan in the top two starting positions. At the drop of the green 16 Matt Marcinko and 26M Phil Desormeau III charged up from the second row into the top two positions. Marcinko held the lead for half a lap until Desormeau powered past. 3 Colby Herzog moved up from sixth to fourth, challenging 83 Burdick for the position. At the checkered flag it was 26M Desormeau, 16 Marcinko and 83 Burdick in the top three positions.

FEATURE RACES
The first feature race of the night was the Vintage Modified class. 66 Jim Kirkwood and x3 Les Myers started in first and second positions with x22 Denzil Billings Jr. and 2 John Stanley in third and fourth positions. At the green flag it was neck and neck through the first two turns, but x3 Myers shot out to the lead by turns three and four. 85NY Chris Ketch moved up from sixth position to second by lap two, while 2 John Stanley moved into third. B10 Paul Billings was on the move, improving from eighth starting position to fourth by lap five. 70 Steve Arbuthnot was also busy, moving up from tenth place to start to fifth place by lap ten. By that time the leaders were already into lapped traffic, with 85NY Ketch using the opportunity to pass x3 Myers. Barely one lap later, on lap thirteen, x3 Myers headed to the pits with mechanical issues, bringing out a caution flag while en route. This brought the field back together for a restart, with 85NY Ketch and 2 Stanley in the top two positions for the green flag. At the restart, 70 Arbuthnot moved up to challenge for third. At the checkered flag, it was 85NY Ketch, B10 Billings and 2 Stanley as the top three finishers for the Vintage Modifieds.

After a brief intermission and a sprinkle of rain, the Pro Street Stocks rolled onto the track for their feature race. 19 Robert Scott and 1x Mike White started in first and second positions. 32 Ryan Shanahan and 272 Tiger Chapman started in the next row, third and fourth positions, respectively. At the green flag it was aggressive racing. Treacherous turn two claimed 272 Chapman, 83D Dustin Bradley, 32 Ryan Shanahan and 19 Robert Scott. Bradley and Shanahan suffered the worst of it, their cars practically fused together at the bottom of turn two. They were pulled apart from their T-shaped wreck by the track tow trucks. 272 Chapman also left the race on the hook. The restart positions had 1x Mike White and 83 Milt Combs in first and second position with 3k Shawn Kirby and 3 Rick Dusckas in the next row, occupying third and fourth positions. On the restart it was hard racing when Combs got up into the track edge and collided with Dusckas. They went off the back of the track at the entrance to turn three, heading for the trees. The crowd held its collective breath until word came across the radio that both drivers were okay and out of their cars. Both cars headed to the pits, with Dusckas returning during the caution. After the extended red flag stoppage, racing got under way once again, with 1x Mike White and 3k Shawn Kirby occupying the top two positions. 45R Preston Forbes and 4 Mike Durham restarted in row two. Only one lap was on the books at the restart. White carried the lead around the lap, but Kirby would not be held back, taking away the lead by lap three. Dusckas encountered mechanical issues during lap six and took his car into the infield to wait out the rest of the race. With ten laps in the books, it was 3K Kirby, 1x white, 45R Forbes , 4 Durham and 690 Sid Harmer Sr. in the top five positions. The field was spread around the entire track, making it a fast final few laps. 19 Robert Scott and 690 Sid Harmer Sr. battled for fifth position, with 1xl John Green nosing in for a piece of the action as well. Harmer gained the advantage in lap sixteen, and rode the fifth position all the way to the finish line. At the checkered flag it was 3K Shawn Kirby, 1X Mike White, 45R Preston Forbes, 4 Mike Durham and 690 Sid Harmer Sr. in the top five positions.

Sportsman Modifieds were on the track, ready to go for their feature race. 415 Andrew Wren and 71 Delbert LeGrow started in first and second positions. 38 Zach Sobotka and 12 Troy Fleming were in row two. The green flag unfurled and 415 Wren charged into sole possession of the lead. In turn four on the first lap 12 Troy Fleming and 92C Bill Coleman connected for a wreck, after Fleming got loose through the turn. The restart had Wren and Sobotka in the first row, with LeGrow and 271 Tiger Chapman Jr. in row number two. Sobotka and Wren were side by side on the restart lap, but Chapman was ready to strike, passing Wren and eventually Sobotka for first place. 44 David Rogers moved into fifth position by lap four, improving from his eighth place start. The caution flag came out once again in lap seven, when 21 Taylor Caprara lost power and rolled slowly through turns three and four. Caprara, who started in tenth, headed to the pits. On the restart, 91 Josh Reome, 1R Ricky Thompson, 57 Anthony Stockman and 60 Jackson Gill got caught up in a wreck in turn four. Reome rolled over once, coming to rest on his wheels after the wild ride, albeit facing the wrong direction. 4 Greg Martin was involved as well, but was able to head to the pits under his own power. All of the drivers involved were able to walk away from the wreck. It was yet another close call, on a caution-filled night. Somehow Reome and Stockman were able to continue racing, Reome with his right side almost completely caved in. On the restart, 271 Chapman shot to the lead, once again, with 38 Sobotka in second. 44 David Rogers was hot on the heels of Sobotka. 1R Ricky Thompson was able to move into fifth position by lap ten, relegating 71 LeGrow to sixth. 28 Jeff Stevenson had managed to avoid all of the wrecks and climbed from fourteenth position up to sixth by lap fourteen. One lap later he was in control of fifth place, closing the gap on fourth. A lap seventeen caution brought the field back together for a restart, erasing Chapman’s extensive lead over second place Rogers. It was tight racing through the first two turns on the restart, with cars going four wide. 1R Thompson caught a few bumps, and it sent him back through the field. 44 Rogers managed to pass Chapman in the melee, taking the lead and the victory as the checkered flag flew. The top five finishers were 44 David Rogers, 271 Tiger Chapman Jr., 38 Zach Sobotka, 621 Brian Hudson, 71 Delbert LeGrow.

Mod Lites rolled out next, with 8 Harley Brown and 1W Brad Reif started in first and second positions with 5x Chris Binoffski and 5 Jason Premo in row two, third and fourth positions respectively. 8 Brown powered ahead for the lead. 73 Rich Rainville moved up from fifth position to start to third by lap four, but half a lap separated him from the first and second position cars of Brown and Reif. In lap six, Reif spun out in turn two, but was able to get the engine fired once again to rejoin the race during the caution. The restart had 8 Harley Brown and 73 Rich Rainville in first and second positions. Once again, Brown leaped out ahead at the drop of the green. 5x Chris Binoffski and 03 Matt Rainville sparred for third, with Binoffski gaining the position by lap eight. The racing stretched out after lap eleven, with Brown in firm control of the lead, 73 Rainville in second, 5x Binoffski third, 1w Reif fourth and 03 Matt Rainville fifth. And that was how it would end, with 8 Harley Brown taking the checkered flag and a trip to victory lane.

358 Small Block Modifieds took over the track next, with 1 Craig Collier and 12 Keith Weston in the top two starting positions. 39 Tyler Bartlett and 10 Josh VanBrocklin started in row two. 9 Billy Dunn, a regular visitor to victory lane at Can-Am, started in eighth position. Collier was the leader through lap one, but gave way to VanBrocklin a lap later. 9 Dunn maneuvered into second position by lap three, and a lap four caution brought him right up on VanBrocklin’s door for a restart. VanBrocklin took the lead into turn one, but Dunn took it out of turn two. By lap six, Dunn was in firm control of the lead with VanBrocklin in second, 57 Rylee Gill in third, 39 Tyler Bartlett in fourth and 27w Nick Webb in fifth. By lap eight 16 Lance Willix II challenged for fifth position, claiming the position just before a caution flag flew for 93 Ryan Bartlett who spun out in turn two. The caution brought the field back together for another restart, with VanBrocklin getting another crack at Dunn. Billy Dunn didn’t relent, however, charging out ahead and leaving VanBrocklin to fend off 57 Gill for second. Meanwhile, 16 Willix moved into fourth position and 55 Matt Woodruff advanced from an eleventh position start to fifth position by lap fourteen. 16 Willix continued his charge, grabbing onto third position by lap twenty, with 57 Rylee Gill and 51X Brady Gill in fourth and fifth positions behind him. At the checkered flag, it was 9 Billy Dunn with the victory once again, with 10 Josh VanBrocklin in second, 16 Lance Willix II in third, 57 Rylee Gill in fourth and 51X Brady Gill in fifth position.

Novice Sportsman Modifieds aligned for the next feature, with 00 Billy Matteson and 4x Mike Gadbaw starting in first and second positions. 1 Cole Davidson and 34 Eric Nier started in row two, positions three and four, respectively. They raced three wide through turn one, with 4x Gadbaw jumping out to the lead. 34 Nier grabbed ahold of second place, with 1 Cole Davidson reining in third. A battle for fourth position erupted between 0 Joe Wilcox and 54G Greg Snyder in lap three, with Snyder securing the position half a lap later. 30 Hunter Schwander was steadily climbing through the field, starting in seventh position and claiming fifth position by lap ten. By lap twelve, the top five cars were stretched around the track, with 4x Gadbaw in a commanding lead. That lead was quickly erased with a caution one lap later, when 66 Corbin Millar left the track with a shredded right rear tire. 4x Gadbaw now had 34 Nier on his door for a restart. Gadbaw launched into first at the green flag, with Nier settling into second. It was a drag race to the checkered flag with 4x Gadbaw taking the victory by a nose over 34 Eric Nier in second, 54g Greg Snyder took third place, 1 Cole Davidson was in fourth, and 0 Joe Wilcox.

Vintage Modifieds rolled out for their second feature with 66 Jim Kirkwood and B3 Steve Billings starting in the top two positions. B22 Steve Lackie and x22 Denzil Billings Jr. started in row two, in third and fourth positions. Almost immediately B3 Billings launched into the lead, but 70 Steve Arbuthnot climbed through the field to challenge for first by lap three. By lap four Arbuthnot was in the lead, with B10 Paul Billings moving into second after a seventh position start. B10 Billings and 70 Arbuthnot traded positions, around the track for a lap before Billings secured the lead. Meanwhile, 2x Alley Amell and 85NY Chris Ketch battled it out for third. By lap six Ketch was firmly in third place, steadily gaining on the leaders. B3 Steve Billings had his hands full in fifth position, trying to keep B22 Steve Lackie from overtaking him. With one lap remaining, 85NY Ketch made his move on 70 Arbuthnot, snatching second place for a moment, but giving it back by the checkered flag. At the finish line it was B10 Paul Billings, 70 Steve Artbuthnot, 85NY Chris Ketch, 2x Alley Amell, and B3 Steve Billings in the top five positions.

The Thunder Cars hit the track next, for their feature, with twenty-three contenders vying for superiority. 17 Mike Greenfield and 61 Gerald Rogers started the race in first and second positions, with 16 Matt Marcinko and 2s Gary Sharlow in row two. Greenfield grabbed the lead immediately, with Marcinko maneuvering into second. Racing was halted as 83 Carl Burdick went for a wild ride, ending up on his roof in turn three. When racing resumed it was 17 Greenfield and 42 Lyle Robinson in the top two positions for the restart with 16 Marcinko and 40H Jerry Herbert in row two. 60 Francis White was charging hard through two laps, moving up from thirteenth starting position to fifth position on the caution restart. 42 Robinson took control of first place all by his lonesome on the restart, but it would all have to happen again when two cars rolled through turn three. 111S Tony St. Mary and 11J Justin Burns were both okay after their wild rides. Another caution was issued almost immediately as 40 Jesse Bender spun in turn two. With just four laps in the books, the four-cylinders whined again on the restart, 42 Robinson in the lead, with 26b Phil Desormeau III in second, after climbing up from twenty-third position to start. By lap seven, Desormeau owned first place, with Robinson in second, 40H Jerry Herbert in third, 26X Dakota Bechler in fourth and 60 Francis White in fifth. Bechler moved into third one lap later, with White hot on his heels. In lap fourteen, 42 Robinson took over the lead, while 26B Desormeau began to fade. At the checkered flag it was 42 Lyle Robinson, 26x Dakota Bechler, 16 Matt Marcinko, 60 Francis White, and 40H Jerry Herbert in the top five positions.

The nightcap for the evening was a dash-for-cash featuring vintage modfieds and sportsman modified cars. 34 Eric Nier was the winner of the six-lap dash.
