Dominic Scelzi Executes Late-Race Pass to Score Louie Vermeil Classic Victory

Inside Line Promotions – CALISTOGA, Calif. (Sept. 3, 2019) – Dominic Scelzi boosted his résumé by recording another marquee win last weekend.

Scelzi captured the opening night of the famed Louie Vermeil Classic before he charged from 10th to fourth during the finale of the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series doubleheader at Calistoga Speedway.

“I was really happy with the weekend,” he said. “Calistoga is a half mile and not many guys out here run half miles. Being on a lot of half miles when we race in the Midwest helps me. You can’t set a torrid pace because sometimes your tires won’t make it. You can’t run wide open because sometimes you won’t make it on fuel. We had a good race car all night long on Saturday. It was one of those circumstances we were lucky enough to save enough fuel and tire to be there at the end.”

Scelzi guided his Roth Motorsports entry to the fourth quickest qualifying time on Saturday before advancing from third to second place in a heat race. That earned a spot into the dash and a fourth-place finish lined him up on the outside of the second row for the A Main.

“They reworked the track so it was pretty narrow,” he said. “I got a really good start and got right into second behind Chase (Johnson). I kept up a good pace. Twenty five laps there is like 40 at most places. I was trying to race smart and bide my time. I felt like I was doing that pretty good. On a restart with about 10 laps to go I knew the top was starting to come in. I went up there, but I hung off turn two and (Ryan) Bernal was able to get by me for second. I tried to not let them get too far out, but not be a hero since there wasn’t much room. Bernal blew a right rear in traffic. We had a restart and were all over Chase when a yellow came out with three laps to go. I got a really good restart and was on his bumper in turn four. He sputtered for fuel, which gave us the lead. We were able to lead the white flag lap and come around for the win.”

The late-race pass gave Scelzi his series-leading fourth triumph of the season and seventh overall. It also marked his first career 410ci winged sprint car victory at Calistoga Speedway.

The event concluded on Sunday with Scelzi qualifying 10th quickest.

“We ran out of fuel in qualifying,” he said. “It cut out before we got to the line on the first lap. That really hurt us and it sputtered again on the second lap. Then we started on the pole in the heat race and the bottom was still pretty greasy. We fell to third and ran there.”

Scelzi lined up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.

“We got a really good start and when we went into turn one the guy who started sixth got sideways in front of me,” he said. “I had to check up and fell back to ninth. I slowly got back to sixth. A yellow came out with around 10 laps to go. I had a good race with Bernal and D.J. (Netto) to get up to fourth. It was a good recovery from where we put ourselves in qualifying.”

The fourth-place finish marked his 24th top five of the season.

Scelzi will return to his family owned car for races this Wednesday through Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., during the Gold Cup Race of Champions week.
