Voigt WINS TTG 100
The racing at Belle Clair Speedway returned on a Friday night with the 100 lap feature for UMP Late Models that is normally held during the St. Clair County Fair. The race paid $2,000 to win and included lap money.
In the UMP Late Model division, there were 25 cars trying to make the feature. Heat race winners were Michael Kloos, Daryn Klein and Mark Voigt. The dash went to Kloos and the semi was won by Kevin Cole.
The 100 lap feature started with Kloos and Voigt on the front row. With the start of the race, Kloos would take the lead with Voigt, Klein, Rick Salter and Tim Manville giving chase. Voigt would take only one lap before he jumped to the lead on the top of the track. He was chased by Klein and Kloos early in the event.
Voigt would not allow anyone to get too close to make a pass. There would be several cautions to slow the race.
Voigt would control the front of the race while the rest of the top five would change several time between several drivers. Kloos, Frankie Martin, Manville and Jason Suhre were the main drivers trying to get the lead or get a good finishing spot. The best run was made by Suhre, who started 12th, and was moving forward during the later stage of the race. Suhre got to the point where on lap 99 he had caught Voigt on the front straight and was about to pass for the lead when the two made contact going into turn one. Suhre unfortunately could not maintai control of his car and spun out in turn one.
Voigt would go on and take the checked flag. He was followed by Manville, Martin, Mike Shulte and Matt Bailey to complete the top five.
In the UMP Modified class, there were 20 cars ready to race. Heat race winners wereBrett Korves, Matt Mevert and Tyler Diebert. The dash went Korves. The 20 lap feature started with Korves and Brian Bielong on the front row. Bielong would take command at the start with Korves, Diebert, Mevert and Chis Smith in the chase mode.
This race would stay even as the first five cars remained the same for the first 14 laps. Then there was a caution and on the restart the five would change big time as as three of the top five would be eliminated after an incident in turn two that scattered much of the top eight cars on the back straight. Eliminated were Mevert, Korves and Smith, who were running top five at the time.
Bielong remained in the lead with Diebert, Rusty Griffaw, Tyler Ratajczyk and Zach Hoffman now in the top five. Bielong would go on and win the feature with Griffaw, Diebert, Ratajczyk and Hoffman completing the top five. Kurt Westerfield won his first feature at Belle Clair Speedway in the Micro Sprint class.
The next race at Belle Clair Speedway will be on Friday August 21.
