Midwest Sprint Touring Series

Dover dominates MSTS return to Huset's

For the first time in nearly 4 years, the Property Solutions of America Midwest Sprint Touring Series returned to the famous 3/8 mile facility in Brandon, South Dakota. Terry McCarl was the most recent winner with the tour, at Huset’s, as he took the win over Justin Henderson on September 11, 2016. It was an “all sprint car” show for the famed track as we joined the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars for the first of two nights of racing. Twenty-four 360 sprint cars made up 3 heat races and an A Feature for the evening.

It was Springfield, Nebraska’s, Jack Dover, who started from the fourth position and dominated early to take his 5th win with the series this year and 32nd in series history. “We’ve done pretty good here. We’ve won here and we’ve wrecked here, but we’ve had a rough last month. We wrecked at Oskaloosa and had some rockers break in the engine, but we fixed that problem. The track was good in the middle tonight because the guys kept throwing the moisture to the middle. I only had a couple of chances to run the middle before everyone would figure out what I was doing. I just want to thank Speedway Engines, Spike Chassis, Liquid Trucking, Carpetland, Certified Transmission, Backlund Plumbing, and SSS Motorsports.”

Pole sitter, Cody Hanson, and outside front row starter, Jacob Jacobsma, made up the front row for the 20 lap A feature. Hansen got a great start as he lead the first lap. Jack Dover, who started fourth, took over 2nd from Jacobsma as we completed lap #3. Eric Lutz had made his way to third as John Lambertz moved to fourth. By lap 6 lapped traffic came into play as Hansen held onto a small half second lead over Dover. Hansen and Dover put on a great show as Dover took over the lead by lap 10. With 9 togo, Dover had a 1.4 second lead over Hansen but Lee Goos Jr spun on the backstretch bringing out the first yellow. The top 5 were Jack Dover, Cody Hansen, Eric Lutz, Justin Jacobsma, and Jody Rosenboom who started 11.

Jack Dover brought the field to the green and got a great start over Hansen who had Lutz all over his tail. Another yellow flew shortly after as fifth place runner, Jody Rosenboom, spun in turn #2. This then kept the running order the same in the top four adding Brant O’Banion to the fifth spot heading to the restart.

With 8 laps togo, Jack Dover, brought the field to the green. Eric Lutz and Cody Hansen almost got together as Lutz’s slidejob knocked Hansen on top of the cushion. It was soon after Gregg Bakker made contact with O’Banion putting him into the wall and out of the race with front end damage. The top 5 were Jack Dover, Eric Lutz, Cody Hansen, Lee Grosz and Justin Jacobsma.

Seven laps remained as the field formed single file and Dover brought them to the green. Eric Lutz tried to keep pace with Dover but Dover had a 1 second lead as they came around for the next lap. Dover extended that lead to 1.6 seconds with 5 laps togo but the red flag flew for Brandon Bosma as he flipped in turns 1 & 2. The top 5 were Jack Dover, Eric Lutz, Cody Hansen, Lee Grosz and Gregg Bakker.

Jack Dover lead the field to the green, with 5 laps remaining, as he took to the high side in turn one with Lutz in tow, but 21st running Lee Goos Jr flipped on the front stretch bringing out another red flag, resetting the field, as a lap wasn’t complete. For the 10 laps, the wind had picked up considerably, sickening off the race track from the bottom, all the way to the cushion, making things tricky for drivers which could be a reason for the cautions.

Five laps were set to remain but with all the cautions, laps were cut back to two laps togo. The race resumed with Dover at the point and Lutz in second. Jack Dover’s restarts have been on point as he has rocketed to huge leads exiting turn two on the restarts. Eric Lutz couldn’t keep pace as Jack Dover took the win with Lutz finishing second and Cody Hansen third, Gregg Bakker fourth, and Lee Grosz fifth.
