Wednesdays with Wayne - Another Car/Another Win!
(Bill W) April 21, 2010 – Another car, another win, no problem! Wayne Johnson hopped into the Brian and Tina Parker #9x last Saturday night and emerged victorious in ASCS-Lone Star region action at the Heart o’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas. The ride marked the fourth different sprint car he has piloted in 2010.
After having to take the previous weekend off, after misfortune with a truck and trailer accident sidelined the Channing Zierolf team, Wayne stuck around in Kilgore with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series and it paid off. “I helped Brian at Kilgore (April 10), and we’d been talking a lot,” he says. “He just asked me to come run his stuff.”
Wayne had never raced in Waco before. “The track reminds me a little bit of Huset’s (Brandon, South Dakota),” he says. “It’s smaller than a 3/8, with a little bit of banking on it.”
Drawing inside row four of his heat race, Wayne drove up to fourth. At first, officials had him out of the redraw. “No one really passed anyone in the heats to be honest,” he said. “The first time they did the points, I didn’t figure in the redraw. They refigured the whole thing and I ended up on the pole! Usually you don’t make the redraw going seventh to fourth.”
Wayne rode Parker’s machine to victory after falling into second in the early stages. “I started on the pole, and Bean Elliott got the run on us on the outside,” he says. “We ran four or five laps, and finally got into lapped traffic and I got past him.”
The win was Wayne’s second of the season, as he added it to his $14,500 Ronald Laney Memorial “King of the 360’s” victory at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida. That night he was driving the Glenn Styres #0x. He’ll be back with the Channing Zierolf team this weekend as they head for West Memphis, Arkansas. The Riverside International Speedway will host the “Rock and Roll 50” on Friday and Saturday. “We’re down here at the shop right now, and we’ve got the new truck and trailer ready to head to West Memphis,” he says of the Zierolf team. “We’re changing the car number to #3, and it will have its own colors and own personality.”
The different look and personality will be vying for a different kind of hardware in West Memphis. The victor will have to lead lap 50 on Saturday night at “The Ditch”. “I’m definitely looking forward to it,” says Wayne. “We’re going to bring home that guitar (trophy)!”

Wayne’s World
Larry Peterson asks: Do you follow NASCAR and do you have any favorite drivers?
Wayne answers: I do follow it. My favorite is Kyle “Rowdy” Busch. I just like the way he races. He does whatever it takes to win. Everybody hates him, and everyone loved Dale Earnhardt, but Busch races just like him.
