Corcoran Masters DIRTCar Sportsman Series Opener at Can-Am

The green flag flew on opening day for the 50th Golden Jubilee season at the Can-Am Speedway this past Friday night with a full pit area and a great crowd on hand to see some of the top stars in the Northeast. But it was the drivers who had been there before that stayed in the spotlight on this night.

The DIRTCar Sportsman Series headlined the night as the North Regional Series was in town. Four time and defending Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman track champion Tyler Corcoran drew the pole position and led early on, but drivers like Eric Nier, Ryan Shanahan, Jessica Power and Cedric Gauvreau were also in the hunt. Corcoran however, was fast in the early part of the 30 lap event and set a torrid pace. Even in lapped traffic Corcoran was not rattled as he had no trouble getting through and continued to distance himself from a quality field by the halfway point. Behind him Gavin Eisle started to charge forward as he moved by Gauvreau for 5th with 10 laps to go. Eisle would then get by Jessica Power, Ryan Shanahan and Eric Nier in a span of four laps to charge to second, but had plenty of work to make up a six second gap between him and Tyler Corcoran. That all changed on lap 29 as the red flew for Mike Fowler, who flipped in turn 3. He was uninjured in the crash. This set up a green-white-checkered finish, giving Eisle one last shot at the win. On the final restart Tyler Corcoran proved to be too much as he drove away to score his 8th career DIRTCar Sportsman Series win. Eisle settled for second with Cedric Gauvreau, Jessica Power and Shane Pecore filling out the top 5.

A strong field of 28 Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modifieds were on hand for 30 laps and six-time track champion Billy Dunn took the lead from the pole position and was fast on this night, as he pulled away from Jackson Gill, Alex Payne, Shaun Shaw and Lucas Fuller in the early laps. Dunn was looking to grab a season opening checkered flag since May 6th of 2022 and was poised to do so as he pulled away from the field, while Gill and the rest of the field tried to figure out a way to catch him. A pair of cautions on lap 8 slowed the race as Cameron Black slowed on the backstretch, then a four car spin in turn one slowed the race once again. When the green flew Dunn showed the way over Gill, but Lance Willix was making a strong charge to the front. Willix passed three cars on the restart and made his way to third, getting by Alex Payne, but had some work to do to catch the top two drivers. Dunn continued to show the way but lapped traffic was coming up which gave Gill his only chance to catch the leader. The former champion Dunn, chose his spots perfectly and was able to get by the slower cars, keeping Gill at bay with Willix still in third. On the final lap Jackson Gill made a run, getting to within two car lengths in turn three, but it wasn’t enough as Billy Dunn scored the opening day win. Gill settled for second with Lance Willix, Alex Payne and Zach Payne finishing out the top 5.

Tucker Donath and Josh Verne Jr. put on a spirited battle in the opening laps of the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car feature. Donath kept his car on the bottom for the speedway while defending track champion Verne did all he could do to get by on the high side, but Donath had no part of it, as he was able to keep the number one position. As the laps clicked off Tucker Donath was able to pull away and never looked back as he went on to scored the win, becoming the third different driver to win the opening day event for the Crate Sprints. Josh Verne Jr. faded at the end but still held on for second while Andrew Hennessey came up for a third place finish at the checkered flag.

The 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar division saw Justin Pope charge to the lead at the start of the event with Jock Symonds right there with him to challenge. Both drivers put on a great show but Symonds was able to get the top spot back as he tried to pull away. In the mid stages of the race Nathan Powers began to challenge the leaders as he moved into contention near the end of the race. Over the final three laps a new contender emerged as Lyle Robinson made his way to second and put pressure on the race leader. On the final lap off turn two, Robninson was able to make the winning pass as he got by Jock Symonds off the turn. Symonds gave it one last shot off the final turn but Robinson had enough of a lead to secure the season opener. Symonds took second over Nathan Powers, Tony Frezzo and defending track champion Francis White.

A few early yellows slowed the pace of the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman event, but it was Logan Brown who set a fast pace in the early laps of with Genevieve Bartlett and Anthony Brownell giving chase. Brown, a karting graduate at Can-Am, was making his first ever start in the class and began to drive away from the field like a veteran, as Bartlett and Brownell continued their battle for second and third. On the final lap Brownell and Bartlett closed the gap but it was Logan Brown winning in his first ever start. Brownell crossed in second over Genevieve Bartlett, with Kyle Reif and Gage Howard.

The Golden Jubilee Season rolls on to next week at the Can Am Speedway as it’s Five Dollar Friday at the track. A full show in all five classes will highlight the night also. Gates open at 5pm with the first green flag dropping at 7pm.
